Connor Hellebuyck did not get the shutout, but his first night in a New Jersey Devils sweater still looked plenty special.
The 33-year-old, acquired from the Winnipeg Jets in a trade on Oct. 23, made his debut with the Devils on Tuesday against the Dallas Stars and came out firing. New Jersey’s defense kept Dallas pinned down early, allowing just six shots in the opening period, and Hellebuyck turned away every one of them as the Devils grabbed a 1-0 lead after one.
The game opened up for New Jersey in the second period, and that gave Hellebuyck room to settle in even more while the offense pushed the advantage to 3-0. He looked to be on his way toward a shutout until Stars center Justin Hryckowian broke through with Dallas’ first goal.
Hellebuyck’s first goal allowed as a Devil came on an unlucky deflection, but the response was immediate. Luke Hughes scored seconds later to wipe away any Dallas momentum and push the Devils ahead 4-1.
That kept Hellebuyck from joining Sam St. Laurent and Mike McKenna as the only goalies to post a shutout in their Devils debuts, but the performance still landed with real force. He stayed sharp through a scoreless third period, and New Jersey added one more when Jack Hughes, Luke’s brother, scored his fourth goal of the season.
By the end of the night, the Devils had rolled to a 5-1 win. Hellebuyck finished with a .941 save percentage, faced only 18 shots, and walked away with his first victory in a Devils uniform. If New Jersey can keep pairing that kind of defensive structure with the offense it showed Tuesday, the team will like its chances in the Metropolitan Division.

Stars Turn To Rookie As Injuries Test Dallas Blue Line
The Stars dipped into their AHL depth ahead of their game against the Canadiens, recalling defenseman Trey Taylor and setting him up for what should be his NHL debut. The move comes as Dallas tries to patch together its blue line after an injury on defense and a corresponding roster shuffle that sent forward Dylan Hryckowian back to the AHL.
Taylors arrival gives the Stars a fresh option on the back end at a time when every healthy defenseman matters. Dallas also had a choice to make on which young blueliner to bring up, and the decision to go with Taylor over Tristan Bertucci adds another layer to a situation that is still unfolding as the team prepares for the next game. Stars Suddenly Face A Massive Jason Robertson Decision
The next big item on the Stars agenda is Jason Robertson, who is in the final season of his current deal and enters the summer with plenty of contract intrigue hanging over him. Dallas would obviously prefer to get ahead of it, and general manager Jim Nill has said he hopes to open extension discussions with Robertsons camp in January, giving the club a chance to work through the situation before it becomes more complicated.
For now, there is no certainty that those talks will produce a new contract, which is what makes this such a noteworthy subplot for a team with expectations to stay in the mix. Robertson remains one of the key pieces of the roster, and the timing of his next deal could shape more than just the offseason calendar if the Stars cannot find common ground when negotiations begin.
