Stars Just Added A Veteran Depth Piece Fans Should Track Closely

Veteran forward Mike Sgarbossa returns to North America, signing a crucial one-year deal with the Texas Stars as he looks to make a significant impact in the AHL.

Mike Sgarbossa is heading back to North America, and the Texas Stars are the team bringing him in.

The forward signed a one-year AHL standard contract with Texas for the 2026-27 season, giving the Dallas Stars’ affiliate a veteran center with a long track record at both the NHL and AHL levels. It’s Sgarbossa’s first contract back in the U.S. since 2024-25.

The 33-year-old spent last season in Switzerland, splitting time between two National League clubs. He played 27 games for HC Lugano, finishing with 9 goals and 18 points, then moved on loan to SC Bern for 12 games and added 13 points there. Sgarbossa also represented Canada at the Spengler Cup.

Before that, he built a wide-ranging pro career in North America. Sgarbossa has appeared in 93 NHL games, beginning with the Colorado Avalanche after his rights were traded from the San Jose Sharks while he was still in the OHL. His NHL path later took him to the Anaheim Ducks in 2015 and the Florida Panthers in 2016, where he logged his longest stretch in the league with 29 games in 2016-17.

He went on to sign with the Winnipeg Jets and then the Washington Capitals, where he spent seven years in the organization. In Hershey, Washington’s AHL club, he had his biggest season in 2018-19, leading the Bears with 30 goals and 65 points. He also got a call-up in 2024 when he was asked to fill the spot left by Evgeny Kuznetsov’s departure.

Across 609 AHL games, Sgarbossa has suited up for the Lake Erie Monsters, Norfolk Admirals, San Diego Gulls, Springfield Thunderbirds, Moose and Bears. He’s also been selected twice for the AHL All-Star Classic, first in 2012-13 with Lake Erie and again in 2019-20 with Hershey.

Jason Robertson Contract Tension Is Putting The Stars To The Test

The Stars have spent part of the summer trying to keep their books flexible, and that backdrop matters as Jason Robertsons next contract comes into focus. Dallas already made moves on July 1 to create salary-cap room and roster maneuverability, a sign the front office knew more pressure was coming as key business piled up around one of its top forwards.

Anthony Di Marcos read is that Robertsons case may be the one most likely to actually reach arbitration, even as Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale appear more likely to get resolved before it gets that far. For a team that has built much of its recent success on stability and smart cap management, the possibility of a drawn-out standoff with Robertson adds another layer of tension to a summer that already feels like a test of how long the current Stars core can hold together. Texas Stars Schedule Just Put One Big Prospect Question In Focus

The Texas Stars newly released 2026-27 schedule gives their fans a first real look at how next season could unfold, and it comes with a little extra history baked in. Among the dates and travel stretches is a rematch with the Hershey Bears, a name that still carries some weight in Cedar Park because of the 2010 Calder Cup Finals meeting between the clubs.

For Dallas, the bigger takeaway may be how the affiliates season now frames Emil Hemming. The former first-round pick is one of the most closely watched players on the roster heading into the year, and the schedule at least puts a timeline on when those next steps will start to matter in a real way. Whether Texas can turn that prospect buzz into something more tangible will be one of the more interesting threads to follow all winter. [Read more 🡒]
