Scott White’s name has been in the GM rumor mill all summer, and the Dallas Stars’ longtime assistant general manager may have another opening to chase.
After being tied to three front-office jobs already this offseason - Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators - White is now expected to be part of the mix for the Detroit Red Wings’ vacancy, according to insider Jeff Marek on The Sheet podcast. Detroit is in the middle of its own front-office overhaul after a series of changes atop the organization, and White appears to be gaining real traction in that search.
For Stars fans, the steady stream of interest in White is hardly surprising. He has spent nearly two decades inside the Dallas organization, starting with the Iowa Stars in 2005-06 and staying with the franchise as it changed around him.
He was promoted to director of hockey operations in 2013-14, then moved up again to assistant general manager before the 2016-17 season. He’s held that role for almost 10 years now.
White has come close more than once this summer. He was reportedly considered a serious candidate in each of the previous searches, and at one point was said to be the favorite for Toronto’s job before that opening went to John Chyka. But the door keeps opening elsewhere, and the momentum seems to be building again in Detroit.
After four teams have reportedly called on him in one offseason, it’s getting harder to picture White remaining in Dallas as just an assistant for much longer.
