The Tampa Bay Lightning opened the day by giving Luke Glendening a look on a professional tryout, and that move could have real teeth once camp gets rolling. Tampa Bay’s on-ice practices begin tomorrow, and the 37-year-old center now gets a chance to earn his way onto the roster in training camp and the preseason.
Glendening brings 934 NHL games of mileage, and his most recent stop was with the Philadelphia Flyers. He split 2025-26 between Philadelphia and the New Jersey Devils, finishing with two goals and nine points in 70 games.
In Philadelphia, he averaged 12:22 of ice time per game, logged two minutes a night on the penalty kill and won 57.2% of his draws. His playoff usage climbed to nearly 14:00 per game, and he helped the Flyers knock off their arch-rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins, in the opening round.
There isn’t much offense left in Glendening’s game, but the defensive value is still there. He looked like a trustworthy fourth-line center for Philadelphia, especially at the faceoff circle, and he remains a regular penalty-killing option. He’s also no stranger to respect from the league’s defensive-minded voters, having received down-ballot Selke Trophy consideration earlier in his career.
The Lightning’s timing matters here, too. Veteran pivot Yanni Gourde is out until at least December after hip surgery, which leaves a clear opening in Tampa Bay’s bottom six. Glendening’s PTO gives him a shot to prove he can help fill that void and possibly turn the tryout into a full contract.
Around the league, several other veterans also landed PTOs.
Dallas brought back defenseman Ben Gleason on a tryout, according to a team announcement. The 28-year-old first joined the Stars organization as an undrafted free agent in 2018, then signed his entry-level deal after winning an OHL title with the Hamilton Bulldogs.
His only NHL appearances have come in Dallas, and he spent five years with the Texas Stars, where he built a reputation as a dependable two-way blue liner. Last season, though, his offense dipped to 22 points in 59 games, the lowest output of his AHL career.
Now he heads back to familiar territory with a chance to re-establish himself.
Pittsburgh added goalie Collin Delia on a PTO for training camp, bringing the 32-year-old back to North American pro hockey on a temporary basis. Delia has 52 NHL games on his resume and spent last season in Sweden, putting his eight-year run in North American professional leagues on pause.
That stretch included one season as a nearly full-time NHL goalie in 2022-23 with the Vancouver Canucks. He was limited to eight games across two levels in Sweden last year, but his last North American run was solid, with a .906 save percentage in 28 games.
In Pittsburgh, Delia could have a legitimate path to a contract. If the Penguins use the expected NHL tandem of Sergei Murashov and Arturs Silovs, Joel Blomqvist would likely be the top goalie for the AHL affiliate, while 25-year-old Taylor Gauthier would be an inexperienced backup and Cam Johnson, who is on an AHL deal, looks more like an ECHL option.
If Gauthier isn’t ready to back up Blomqvist, Delia could step in as the organization’s No. 4 goalie.
Ottawa also added a goalie on a PTO, signing Russian netminder Vadim Zherenko. The 25-year-old has not made his NHL debut and has been sitting on the open market as a Group VI unrestricted free agent.
A seventh-round pick by St. Louis in the 2019 draft, Zherenko spent four seasons in the AHL with the Springfield Thunderbirds and became the team’s No. 1 goalie in 2025-26.
Last season, he went 17-16-5 in 42 games with a .902 save percentage.
Zherenko also has a real shot to land an NHL deal in Ottawa because of the uncertainty in the organization’s crease, including at the AHL level with the Belleville Senators. If Ottawa keeps Linus Ullmark and Samuel Ersson in the NHL as expected, Leevi Merilainen would be exposed to waivers and could be claimed.
If that happens, the Senators would be left with two under-23 goalies in the AHL, and neither Jackson Parsons nor Kevin Reidler appears ready to take over as a No. 1.
Zherenko’s AHL experience gives Ottawa some insurance if Merilainen - or Ersson - is lost to waivers later this month.
