Stars Already Have An Early Problem Fans Didn't Want To See

The Dallas Stars face early-season struggles as offensive deficiencies leave them winless and searching for solutions on the road ahead.

The Stars are still searching for their footing, and the early warning signs are showing up in the same places. A 2-1 loss in Nashville on Saturday dropped Dallas to 0-2-0 for the first time since 2019, and the bigger issue may be even harder to ignore: the offense has only managed one goal through two games.

Dallas did get the opening punch, scoring in the first minute, but the start didn’t hold. Nashville answered, the game tilted, and the Stars never fully recovered. By the time Dallas found a better rhythm in the third period, the finish wasn’t there.

“Obviously not where we need to be,” Stars captain Jamie Benn said. “Slow starts.

First periods have been terrible. It’s on the players in here.”

The players took their share of the responsibility after the game, even if the problem clearly stretched beyond one group. Benn pointed to the need for a full night’s work, not just a late push.

"It's gotta be 60 minutes right from the drop of the puck,” Benn said. “For this group, it's unacceptable. Like I said, it's gotta be a full 60."

The Stars were better in the final period, and the numbers reflected that. They finished with a 30-26 edge in shots on goal, a 65-52 advantage in shot attempts and more quality scoring chances than Nashville. None of it changed the outcome.

Mikko Rantanen said the offense is being dragged down by more than one issue.

“We don’t get out as clean as we’d like and then we are defending,” said forward Mikko Rantanen when asked if the offensive woes revolve around creating chances or finishing. “We got some looks in the third but couldn’t finish.

Then, we’re not generating. It has to be both.”

He also said the group wasn’t pleased with how long it took to settle in.

“We’re obviously not happy with the first 30 minutes, but the third period is when we were winning battles and forwards were helping the D,” forward Mikko Rantanen said.

Dallas has shown inconsistency through the first two games, and that was part of the frustration Saturday. St. Louis, which beat the Stars 4-0 on Friday, and Nashville both brought stretches of real urgency, and Dallas couldn’t match it for long enough.

Benn has been one of the early bright spots. The lighter version of the captain was noticeable in 13 minutes of ice time Saturday, skating on a line with Roope Hintz and Jason Robertson.

“I feel good,” Benn said. “I believe I have more in here.”

Coach Glen Gulutzan continued to mix and match his lines in search of the right fit. He moved Sam Steel with Johnston and Rantanen, and put Tyler Seguin with Justin Hryckowian and Arttu Hyry.

“We’re going to have to do that to find the right mixture to get us going,” Gulutzan said. “We’ve got a few guys like that.

Whether it’s Ritzy, Steely, Benny, Seggy, all of those guys did it tonight. As a 20-man group, we just need to execute at a higher level.”

Dallas is also missing Matt Duchene because of a lower body injury, but the roster still has enough depth to cover some of that ground. Colin Blackwell stepped in and played well, while Miro Heiskanen kept doing the heavy lifting.

He scored the Stars’ lone goal, logged 24:35 and put five shots on goal. Even so, the team needs more from the rest of the lineup.

“We’ve got to find a way to score dirty goals,” Benn said. “They can’t all be pretty.”

The schedule keeps moving fast. San Jose comes to Dallas on Monday, then the Stars head out for games at Buffalo and Pittsburgh. The road doesn’t get softer anytime soon, and that makes the current issues feel even more urgent.

“It’s creating chances and finishing,” Gulutzan said of the offensive woes. “We’re not creating at a high level right now. A lot of that stems from how we’re breaking out pucks and the other part is we’re spending too much time in the D zone losing battles.”

Which means the work is only beginning.

Stars Already Face An Early Question They Didn't Want Back

The Stars walked into Bridgestone Arena and left with another reminder that early-season offense is still a work in progress. Dallas fell 2-1 to the Nashville Predators in a game that offered very few clean looks for either side, and the limited shot total fit the broader concern around a team that has not been creating much at the start of the year.

Miro Heiskanen gave Dallas the only goal, and the rest of the night was spent searching for a response that never quite came. The matchup also brought an added layer of familiarity, as former Stars forward Mavrik Bourque skated against Dallas for the first time since being dealt to Nashville over the summer, another small but notable subplot in a game that left the Stars with more questions than answers. Stars Fans Just Got A Frustrating Reminder About That Blues Shutout

The Blues quick two-game stretch served as an unwelcome reminder of how sharp St. Louis looked in the shutout over Dallas before running into Colorado. Even in the loss to the Avalanche, the Blues had enough to point to from the earlier win, with Pius Suter involved in a goal and Dalibor Dvorsky adding a score while centering the third line, the kind of depth touch that can make a tight game feel even tighter for an opponent.

For the Stars, the sting of that shutout lingers because it was built on more than just a hot night from the goalie. St. Louis got timely work from its lineup pieces, and now the Blues are moving into a three-game slate that includes their first home games of the season, which only adds to the sense that Dallas caught them at the wrong moment and may have to sit with that one a little longer.
