MacKenzie Weegar didn’t hide where he stands on the growing trend of NHL stars looking to get out of Canadian markets.
The former Calgary Flames defenseman, now with the Utah Mammoth, said he was disappointed to see players pushing for moves away from Canada. Speaking on OverDrive, Weegar made it clear that his own experience in Calgary was a strong one, even while acknowledging that some American markets can have “a little more” to offer.
“For me, personally, I had a great experience in Canada,” Weegar said. “Calgary was an absolute blast to play in that city. I think there’s great things to come for that team.”
He pointed to the fans, the passion for hockey, and the overall experience of playing north of the border as major positives. In Calgary’s case, he also suggested the team’s upcoming new arena could help make the city even more appealing.
Still, Weegar did not pretend the pull of U.S. markets isn’t real. He said places such as Utah can “offer a little bit more,” but followed that by saying, “It’s a bit unfortunate to see players wanting out of Canada,” Weegar said. “I know how passionate the fans are there, the citizens in each city, how much they love their hockey and their star players.”
The comments also carried an unmistakable edge toward players who try to dictate where they play.
“At the end of the day, I think we’re all hockey players. It doesn’t really matter where you play; you just want to play in the NHL.
It’s the best league in the world. To represent any jersey that you wear, it means a lot, and it’s an honor.”
Whether he meant it as a direct shot or not, the message was hard to miss: Weegar believes the badge on the front of the jersey should matter more than the city on the back end of the trade request.
