Matt Duchene’s status for the Dallas Stars’ regular season opener is suddenly in doubt after he hit a setback with an upper-body injury.
The center had been working through the issue all through training camp, and while there was a point when he seemed to be moving closer to a return, that progress stalled recently. With Friday’s game against the St. Louis Blues looming, his availability no longer looks promising.
The injury has been a constant since the beginning of camp, though the exact cause and timing remain unclear. Duchene missed the first couple days of camp for maintenance before it was disclosed as an injury, and the problem was not something he picked up in the preseason. He also finished last season healthy, so this is not a lingering issue from that run.
Because of the injury, Duchene never appeared in a preseason game.
Dallas had projected him on the third line with Sam Steel and Jamie Benn, while also using him on the top power-play unit. The Stars do not have any extra forwards on the roster right now, which leaves them with two options: recall a player from the Texas Stars or go with 11 forwards and seven defensemen, using Kyle Capobianco.
Even with the injury trouble, Duchene is coming off a strong year. He put up 16 goals and 29 assists for 45 points in 57 games, a pace that works out to 64 points over a full 82-game season. He also raised his level in the playoffs, finishing with two goals and seven assists for nine points in six games before Dallas was eliminated early.

Stars Just Made Their Goaltending Plan A Lot Clearer
The Stars have taken another step toward shaping their long-term crease by locking up Casey DeSmith on a contract extension, a move that adds more clarity to a position that always carries weight in Dallas. Since joining the club in 2024, DeSmith has given the Stars steady play and a strong run of results, including a franchise-record 13-game point streak during the 2025-26 season, which helped establish him as more than just a short-term fit.
DeSmiths value to the organization has only grown with time, and his rsum extends beyond Dallas too, including international duty for the United States at the 2023 IIHF World Championship. The new deal gives the Stars a cleaner picture in goal for the years ahead, even if the exact financial shape of the contract is the part the team is choosing to keep in the background for now. Stars Used A Rare Getaway To Strengthen What Matters Most
A four-day trip to Traverse City gave the Stars a chance to step away from their normal routine and work in a setting that had long been used by the Red Wings. Dallas used the stay for two practices, but the bigger value came from the time spent together in a different environment as the club continues preparing for the regular season.
Coach Glen Gulutzan and general manager Jim Nill both pointed to the benefits of that kind of setting, where team cohesion can grow as much as on-ice sharpness. For a roster trying to get its footing before the games start counting, the getaway offered a rare chance to tighten the bonds that often matter most once the schedule gets rolling. [Read more 🡒]
Stars Just Sent A Clear Message About Casey DeSmith
Casey DeSmith is sticking around in Dallas for the long haul after the Stars agreed to a two-year contract extension, a move that gives the club another layer of stability in goal. The veteran netminder was already entering the final season of his previous three-year deal, and the new agreement keeps him in the organization as he moves deeper into his 30s.
For the Stars, the timing says plenty about how they view DeSmiths place in the room and on the roster. He has settled into the kind of role teams value in a crowded playoff race, and Dallas clearly sees enough reliability there to commit well beyond the present. What comes next is the financial structure of the deal, which lines up with the rest of the clubs longer-term planning. [Read more 🡒]
