John Klingberg is done with hockey at 34, closing the book on a career that made him one of the NHL’s most recognizable offense-first defensemen of the last decade.
The longtime blueliner announced his retirement from professional hockey after a 13-year NHL run that stretched from 2014 to 2026 and included 700 games, 92 goals and 443 points. He reached the 700-game mark with the San Jose Sharks during the 2025-26 season.
Klingberg’s NHL journey began with the Dallas Stars in 2014-15, and that’s where he built the reputation that followed him around the league. He spent eight seasons in Dallas and piled up 374 points in 552 games, with 71 goals and 303 assists, making himself a constant threat from the back end.
After Dallas, Klingberg also skated for the Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers and Sharks. His career was slowed late by serious hip and foot injuries, and he went through surgeries and multiple comebacks to get back to the NHL. That included a strong playoff run with Edmonton in 2025.
Twice, Klingberg got all the way to the Stanley Cup Final and came up just short. The first trip came with the Stars in 2020, when Dallas reached the championship round before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Five years later, he was back on that stage with Edmonton in 2025 against the Florida Panthers, and the Oilers again fell short of the title.
His final season came in San Jose, where he posted 27 points in 56 games. Klingberg leaves the league with 443 regular-season points and a place among the more productive Swedish defensemen of his generation.
