Dallas Stars Trade Rising Prospect for Bold New Defensive Addition

In a move aimed at bolstering their blue line depth, the Dallas Stars have swapped young defensemen with Calgary, bringing aboard a high-upside playmaker in Jeremie Poirier.

Stars Trade for Jeremie Poirier, Sending Gavin White to Calgary in AHL Defenseman Swap

The Dallas Stars made a move to bolster their blue line depth, acquiring defenseman Jeremie Poirier from the Calgary Flames in exchange for fellow blueliner Gavin White. Poirier will report to the Texas Stars, Dallas’ AHL affiliate, where he’ll look to make an impact in the development pipeline.

This is a classic prospect-for-prospect trade - two 23-year-old defensemen, each with upside, getting a fresh start in new systems.

Let’s start with Poirier. The former third-round pick (72nd overall in 2020) has shown flashes of high-end offensive talent from the back end.

Through 35 games this season with the Calgary Wranglers, he’s tallied six points (1 goal, 5 assists) and 24 penalty minutes. But it’s last season that really turned heads: Poirier racked up 42 points (5 goals, 37 assists) in 71 games, leading the Wranglers in assists and finishing 11th among all AHL defensemen in scoring.

He’s not just a regular-season contributor either - Poirier has suited up in three straight Calder Cup Playoff runs (2023-2025), collecting 12 points in 17 postseason games. That kind of experience at a young age is valuable, especially for a player still refining his game.

At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, Poirier brings a mobile, puck-moving presence to the blue line. His offensive instincts are evident - he ranked second on the Wranglers in shootout goals last season and was fifth in shots taken.

That tells you he’s confident with the puck and not afraid to jump into the play. For Dallas, this is a bet on upside.

If Poirier can tighten up defensively and continue to develop his decision-making, he could be a sneaky-good addition to the organization.

On the flip side, Gavin White heads to Calgary after spending his entire pro career with the Texas Stars. A fourth-round pick by Dallas in 2022, White has put up 27 points (5 goals, 22 assists) in 118 career AHL games. This season, he’s recorded five points in 23 games, and last year he posted 11 points over 46 contests.

White is a bit more of a stay-at-home type compared to Poirier. At 6-foot and 185 pounds, he’s not the biggest defenseman, but he plays a responsible game.

He’s also logged Calder Cup Playoff experience, contributing an assist over six games. For the Flames, White could provide steady depth and a different profile on the back end.

Ultimately, this is a low-risk move for both clubs - two young defensemen looking to take the next step, each getting a new environment to do it in. For Dallas, Poirier’s offensive ceiling is intriguing. Now it’s about whether he can put it all together in Cedar Park and eventually push for NHL minutes.
