Blues Already Facing A Lineup Issue After Stars Opener

The Blues face a setback as Alexey Toropchenko's upper-body injury sidelines him, prompting re-evaluation in six weeks.

St. Louis Blues forward Alexey Toropchenko is headed for a long absence after suffering an upper-body injury in Friday’s season opener against the Dallas Stars.

According to The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford, Toropchenko will be re-evaluated in six weeks and is expected to miss at least that long. He left the game in the second period after taking two hits behind the net, with the injury initially described as a shoulder issue.

The sequence unfolded after Toropchenko absorbed a hard check from defenceman Lian Bischel and then, while moving toward the boards, took another shot from the side from Tyler Seguin. Toropchenko immediately reached for his upper right arm as he fell to the ice.

After being tended to on the ice, he was visibly hurting as he made his way down the tunnel and into the dressing room, hunched over and bracing his arm with about 16 and a half minutes left in the second period.

Following the Blues’ 4-0 win, head coach Jim Montgomery said Toropchenko was sore with an upper body injury and was “more than day-to-day.” Montgomery added that he still didn’t have an MRI at that point, but expected more clarity on Saturday, when the Blues were scheduled to play in Colorado.

Toropchenko, 27, is in his sixth NHL season, all with St. Louis. He’s coming off a 2025-26 season in which he scored four goals and finished with 11 points, both his lowest totals in a full season since his rookie year, when he appeared in just 28 games.

Through 325 career NHL games, the Moscow native has 34 goals and 71 points.

Stars Offense Suddenly Facing Early Pressure After Rare 0-2 Start

The first week of the 2026 NHL season has already drawn a sharp line between clubs that look ready to roll and those still searching for their footing, and Dallas has found itself on the wrong side of that divide. After a rare 0-2 start, the Stars are dealing with the kind of early-season frustration that can linger if an offense expected to drive the team does not find its rhythm quickly.

What stands out most is how unusually quiet the attack has been, especially with the Stars counting on their best forwards to set the tone. Mikko Rantanen, Wyatt Johnston and Jason Robertson have yet to click the way Dallas needs them to, leaving the club with plenty of work to do before the schedule starts asking harder questions. Jason Robertsons Slow Start Is Already Raising A Bigger Stars Concern

Jason Robertsons opening week has added an early layer of unease around the Stars, even if it is far too soon to draw any sweeping conclusions. After an offseason defined by contract pressure and plenty of attention on his next deal, the winger has not yet delivered the kind of quick start Dallas wanted from one of its centerpiece scorers, and his early usage suggests the club is still leaning on him heavily to help set the tone.

The larger concern is less about one quiet stretch than what it hints at for a team trying to stay squarely in the contender lane. Dallas can live with a slow night or two, but Robertsons start invites a broader question about how much patience exists when expectations are so high and the spotlight on every shift is already so bright.
