Mavs Finally Near A Frontcourt Boost They Desperately Need

As Santi Aldama prepares for his Dallas Mavericks debut following knee surgery, his return promises to bolster the team's offensive and defensive dynamics after a strategic trade acquisition.

The Dallas Mavericks took a meaningful step toward getting Santi Aldama on the floor this week, recalling the 7-footer from a rehab assignment with the Texas Legends. After sitting out the preseason and the first five regular-season games, Aldama is now beginning the ramp-up toward his Mavericks debut.

Dallas brought Aldama in during the summer in a trade that also sent European rookie Tarik Biberovic to the organization. Biberovic is still sidelined with injury as the Mavericks have opened the season 3-2. The deal was a big one for Dallas, which gave up guard AJ Johnson, a first-round pick in 2030, and two future second-round picks to land Aldama as part of a six-team trade.

Aldama’s path back has been shaped by the knee surgery he underwent last season while with the Memphis Grizzlies. Before his recall, he had scrimmaged with the Legends and was listed as “doubtful” before not playing in Dallas’ blowout win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

What makes Aldama so intriguing for the Mavericks is the blend he brings. He’s coming off a season in which he posted career highs across the board, averaging 14.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists while starting 11 of the 43 games he played. He logged a career-best 27.9 minutes per game, and his 35 percent shooting from 3-point range gives Dallas a stretch option it doesn’t usually get from its big men.

That spacing is part of why he stands out in a frontcourt that already has size. Earlier this offseason, May pointed to Aldama’s unique profile and said, "Santi, obviously, being a seven-footer, could be a heck of a stretch five in a death lineup," before adding, "The problem is the other teams don’t put the fives on him. Do we have a group that can go punish a five elsewhere or can he punish a three man or four man, whoever they put on him?"

Aldama should also help on the defensive end, where Dallas currently misses shot-blocking center Dereck Lively II, who remains out after his latest foot surgery.

The timing of Aldama’s debut is still up in the air, but he made clear he’s close enough to feel the anticipation building. "I’m working on it.

It’s been a long summer in that sense," Aldama said about his recovery. "I’m working every day and feeling better every day, so I’m excited to get back out there."

His next chance to play could come Friday, when the Mavericks host the Houston Rockets.

Mavericks Just Delivered The Kind Of Win Fans Needed

The Mavericks got exactly the kind of response win they needed at home, controlling the Oklahoma City Thunder from start to finish in a 120-96 victory. Dallas stayed in charge throughout the second half and never let the NBAs last unbeaten team find a real rhythm, with Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg both helping set the tone on a night that felt important well beyond the standings.

Oklahoma City came in short-handed, missing several key pieces because of injury, and the matchup looked different before the opening tip. Even so, the way Dallas handled the moment should matter to a team trying to steady itself and give its fan base something to build on, especially after a performance like this against one of the leagues early standard-bearers. Kyrie Irving Just Got The Kind Of Praise Mavericks Fans Love

Even as Kyrie Irving works his way through the 2026-27 season after the torn ACL he suffered in March 2025, the respect around him keeps showing up from across the league. Golden State rookie Yaxel Lendeborg recently singled out Irving as the best-skilled player, describing how difficult he is to guard, which is exactly the kind of praise Mavericks fans are used to hearing when one of their stars comes up in conversation.

The timing makes it even more interesting with Golden State and Dallas set to meet on Nov. 18, a game that already carries a little extra intrigue for both sides. Lendeborg is expected to spend his attention on Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg, Dallas' leading scorer this season, but Irving's name is the one that has already sparked the kind of admiration that tends to travel quickly around the league. Mavericks Could Catch A Break With Houston's Biggest Frontcourt Decision

Houstons frontcourt plans are suddenly worth watching ahead of Friday nights meeting with the Mavericks, with Alperen Sengun listed as questionable because of an injury. He already sat out the Rockets previous game against Milwaukee for the same reason, and his status matters because he has been one of Houstons most important players this season, giving the team scoring, rebounding and playmaking from the middle of the floor.

For Dallas, any absence from Sengun would alter a matchup that normally runs through him. The Rockets have leaned heavily on his production, and if he is unable to go again, Houston would have to adjust its rotation in the paint and find another way to replace what he brings on both ends. For a Mavericks team looking for every edge it can get, that is the kind of break worth monitoring right up to tipoff. [Read more 🡒]
