Mavs Enter Preseason With One Huge Cooper Flagg Question

As the Dallas Mavericks head into preseason with an uncertain lineup, rookie coach Dusty May is focused on finding the right player combinations to improve on last season's dismal performance.

As the Mavericks get set for preseason, Dusty May is still sorting through the most basic question on the roster: who starts?

The first-year coach didn’t pretend to have the answer yet, and he didn’t dress it up. When asked where things stand, May said, “I have no idea at this point,''

That uncertainty is part of the early picture in Dallas, where the team has 20 players in camp and a rotation that is clearly still taking shape. The Mavs open preseason against the Houston Rockets on Oct. 9 at The Venetian Arena in Macao, then begin the regular season on Oct. 21 at Houston. But the first five remains unsettled, and May said he’s been watching the chatter online about possible lineup groups.

“Obviously, I’m on social media,'' he said. "I’ve seen about the first team and second team.

We haven’t really settled into that now. We’re more or less looking at two- and three-man lineup combinations, one- and five-man lineup combinations.

"So anyone that has any speculation on the first five and the second five, please let me know because I have no idea at this point. We’re going to keep trying. Yeah, please let me know.”

For now, the two names that clearly anchor the conversation are Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving. Around them, May is still experimenting, and the lineup picture could keep shifting beyond the immediate preseason window.

That doesn’t mean he’s unhappy with what he’s seeing. Quite the opposite.

May said he is “pleasantly surprised with how these guys are problem-solving and working together. They look like they really enjoy passing and sharing the ball, which is always a great sign.''

The challenge, though, is turning that early chemistry into a functional rotation. Dallas is coming off a 26-win season in 2025-26, so every combination matters as the team tries to rebuild and find a group that fits. May said the process is still about discovery, especially when it comes to how long different players can stay effective.

“We’ll learn more about ourselves, and that way, how long can certain guys play well effectively? Other guys play better after they’ve been in for an extended period. Some guys need shorter bursts.

"So we’re trying to learn all of those things about our guys now and throughout the preseason especially.”

For now, the answer to the starting lineup question is still out there somewhere. May is just trying to find it.

Mavericks Need More From Naji Marshall In One Crucial Area

Naji Marshall came to Dallas with a reputation as a useful two-way wing, someone who could give the Mavericks sturdy perimeter defense and enough offensive pop to keep the floor spaced. Since arriving, though, the shooting has not traveled with him in the same way it did in New Orleans, and the team is still waiting for that part of his game to settle in alongside the rest of his role.

Marshall has still shown value as a defender, including at least one steal per game in each of the last two seasons, but Dallas wants more consistency on both ends as it heads into the new year. With Kyrie Irving set to return to the lineup, the Mavericks need Marshall to be cleaner and more reliable as a spacer and to bring the kind of effort that helps hold up the wing rotation over the course of a long season. Mavericks Opening Night Lineup Suddenly Feels Much More Settled

Dereck Lively II has not yet returned to practice, and his chances of being ready for the Mavericks season opener look slim enough to narrow one of the teams biggest early questions. With the calendar moving toward opening night, Dallas is beginning to get a clearer picture of how its frontcourt will line up, and that matters for a roster still sorting out roles around the paint.

Dusty May is expected to go with Daniel Gafford at center to begin the season, a familiar move for a player who has already started games for Dallas before. The more interesting wrinkle is what comes next: Gafford is slated to take on a bigger offensive role, and that could mean a different look for the Mavericks spacing if his game stretches beyond the usual rim-running duties. Dereck Lively II Just Became A Bigger Long-Term Mavs Question

Dereck Lively II has become one of the more interesting long-term decisions on the Mavericks docket, with the team facing an October 19 deadline to work out a rookie-scale extension. For now, the expectation is that Dallas will keep its powder dry and take a longer look, especially with Lively still working back from foot surgery and not yet ready to return to practice.

That creates an awkward but understandable pause for a player the Mavericks still view as part of their future, but one whose health and role need more clarity before any multiyear commitment. Recent reporting has also pointed to other players from the 2023 draft class being more likely to land extensions first, which only sharpens the question hanging over Lively as Dallas weighs recovery, fit and timing.
