The Dallas Mavericks are on the hunt for a new general manager, and they're not holding back in their search. Since parting ways with Nico Harrison last November, following the controversial trade of Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, the Mavs have been operating with Matt Riccardi and Michael Finley as co-interim GMs. But now, team governor Patrick Dumont is spearheading a comprehensive, league-wide search expected to ramp up during the offseason.
With the NBA Draft looming on June 25, the Mavericks aim to have their new GM in place by then. According to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, the Mavs have their sights set on some of the biggest names in the NBA's front offices. Among those reportedly on Dumont’s wish list are Sam Presti from the Thunder, Brad Stevens from the Celtics, Tim Connelly from the Timberwolves, and Koby Altman from the Cavaliers.
Presti is renowned for his strategic acumen, highlighted by his trade of Paul George for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and a haul of future draft picks. Stevens, who successfully transitioned from coaching to the executive suite, led the Celtics to a championship victory over the Mavericks in 2024.
While these names might seem ambitious, it underscores Dumont’s desire for a proven leader to guide the Mavericks. This approach marks a shift from previous strategies, as reflected in Mark Cuban’s acknowledgment of past missteps, including hiring Harrison without prior team management experience.
There’s also buzz about Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd potentially moving into an executive role, though the preference is for him to continue coaching. His leadership is seen as crucial for the development of rookie sensation Cooper Flagg, who, alongside Kyrie Irving and a promising draft pick, represents the future of the franchise.
With such a dynamic mix of talent and potential, the Mavericks' GM position is undoubtedly an attractive opportunity, despite the high expectations. The team’s vision for the future is clear, and securing a top-tier executive could be the key to unlocking it.
