Mavericks May Have Found Another Hidden Gem

As the Dallas Mavericks eye playoff hopes, Tyler Smith emerges as a promising asset, reminding the team of the strategic depth already on their roster.

With just nine games left in the regular season, the Dallas Mavericks have a golden opportunity to give their younger players some valuable minutes. While fans are eager to see more of AJ Johnson, head coach Jason Kidd is already making strides by giving two-way contract players John Poulakidas and Tyler Smith more time on the court.

Smith, in particular, showcased his potential during Dallas' recent loss to the Denver Nuggets. If his development continues on this trajectory, Smith might just be the latest in a line of successful two-way contract finds for Dallas.

Poulakidas has shown flashes of his shooting prowess, but Wednesday night's game was Smith's time to shine. Standing at 6-foot-9, Smith is a versatile wing who can hit open threes, defend multiple positions, and cut effectively to the basket.

In just eight minutes against the Nuggets, the 21-year-old racked up eight points on 3-5 shooting. There’s a case to be made that Kidd could have utilized him more, given his impressive first-half performance.

Smith, a product of the NBA G League Ignite, has demonstrated his skills over 67 games in the G League, averaging 12.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and about a steal and block per game with solid shooting percentages. While he needs to bulk up and refine his shooting consistency at the NBA level, his frame and skills suggest he could evolve into a reliable rotational player.

There was some fan skepticism when Dallas opted to fill their two-way slots with Smith and Poulakidas instead of retaining Miles Kelly, who has been lighting it up with the Texas Legends. However, Smith's versatility and performance against Denver are starting to vindicate the Mavericks' decision.

Dallas may still feel a twinge of regret if Kelly finds success elsewhere, but the focus now is on Smith's potential as a 3-and-D wing. The Mavericks have a strong track record with two-way contract players like Ryan Nembhard and Brandon Williams, and Smith could be the next success story.

Given their limited control over future first-round picks until 2031, the Mavericks need to maximize their talent acquisition through avenues like two-way contracts. Building a solid young core around Cooper Flagg is crucial, and Smith’s age and potential make him a strong candidate for a two-way contract next season or even a standard deal if he continues to impress.
