Jason Williams has decided to let the market speak for Cooper Flagg’s most coveted rookie card.
The South Carolina collector who pulled Flagg’s one-of-one Rookie Debut Patch Autograph in a live break last month is sending it to auction, turning down a string of offers that already pushed the card into rare territory before a bid was ever placed publicly.
Fanatics Collect will feature the card in its September Premier Auction, which runs from Sept. 10 through Sept. 24. The card has also already been graded PSA Gem Mint 10, a stamp that only adds to its heavyweight status in the basketball card world.
The rejected offers tell the story of just how aggressively people wanted this card. Goldin Auctions founder Ken Goldin put a $1.5 million cash advance on the table.
The Mavericks offered an experience package valued between $800,000 and $1.2 million, including decades of season tickets and access to Flagg himself. Alt then launched what it called a Debut Bounty Auction, where bidding reached $3 million, or $3.6 million with the buyer's premium, on the condition that Williams consign the card there.
He passed on all of it.
Williams had kept his plans close to the vest for weeks. Right after pulling the card, he told ESPN, "It's in a safe place for right now. I'm just sort of trying to lay low."
Now the auction will settle what the card is actually worth. The estimates have been all over the map, from Sports Cards Investor founder Geoff Wilson’s early $1.5 million projection to numbers in the $3 million to $5 million range. Until the hammer falls, it’s all guesswork.
There is at least one useful comparison. Paul Skenes’ one-of-one MLB Rookie Debut Patch Autograph brought $1.11 million through Fanatics Collect in March 2025, making it one of the priciest baseball cards ever sold. That card followed a similar path, with the Pirates also putting together a franchise bounty package that was ultimately rejected in favor of auction.
Whether Flagg’s card gets there or goes even higher is the question hanging over this sale. Basketball and baseball don’t always move in lockstep at the top of the hobby market, so the comparison has limits. Still, Flagg’s current card record sits at $366,000, set in a March auction, and this piece is widely expected to clear that number by a huge margin.
Part of the appeal is baked into the card itself. The patch came from the jersey Flagg wore in the first half of his NBA debut on Oct. 22, 2025, and that jersey fetched $1 million at NBA Auctions in February.
Topps had Flagg sign the card at Fanatics Fest in July, where he said he felt a little nervous before signing. Flagg wore three debut patches that night, and the other two were destroyed on purpose so this card would stay one of one.
The auction opens Sept. 10 and closes two weeks later. When it ends, the hobby will finally have a real number for what a Cooper Flagg debut patch is worth.
