Mavericks Just Set Up Their Toughest End Of Roster Decisions

With the Dallas Mavericks making strategic roster changes by waiving John Poulakidas, speculation swirls around their plans to fill the newly open slot before the season begins.

The Dallas Mavericks used Saturday to make a pair of roster cuts, and one of them cleared a path on the two-way side.

Dallas announced that it waived guards Seth Lundy and John Poulakidas, trimming its group as the preseason wraps and the regular season approaches. Poulakidas, a sharpshooting guard on a two-way deal, had drawn some surprise from fans when his name popped up, but the move lines up with how his preseason unfolded.

He was a healthy scratch in the second preseason game against the Houston Rockets, and while he did score 16 points against the New Orleans Pelicans, his value was tied mostly to his shooting. The Mavericks still need perimeter help in the backcourt, but they already have Jett Howard on a two-way and Tarik Biberovic on the standard roster who can provide similar looks.

There had also been chatter about Poulakidas heading to Greece next season, and this move could accelerate that possibility.

Now Dallas has another opening to consider, and the expectation is that the team will look for another playmaker. At the same time, the bigger roster question remains Dwight Powell, who is still the name to watch as the Mavericks sort through their final decisions.

One possible route would be to waive Moussa Cisse and reopen a path for Powell, with the idea of bringing Cisse back on a two-way deal. But that may be easier said than done, because Cisse appears to have some interest elsewhere around the league.

NBA insider Jake Fischer reported recently that the Philadelphia 76ers are a team to watch for him after Ariel Hukporti tore his Achilles, and even though they added Tacko Fall on a two-way, they could still use another big. Cisse also has a history with the New York Knicks, who signed him to an offer sheet that Dallas quickly matched, so other teams could come into play as well.

For now, the Mavericks have one two-way spot open and more roster maneuvering ahead.

Mavericks Got Key Players Back But One Concern Still Looks Serious

Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg were back in the lineup for Dallas preseason finale against Atlanta, and the Mavericks at least got a look at some of the offensive upside they hope will matter when the games count. The return of those key pieces gave the night a different feel, even if the result did not, as Dallas fell to the Hawks in a game that served more as a final tune-up than a true measuring stick.

The bigger concern came on the other end, where the defense never really found its footing and left Dusty May with plenty to sort through before the regular season opener. For a team trying to build around its talent and get the rotation settled, the offensive promise is encouraging, but the sluggish defensive showing was a reminder that the Mavericks still have work to do before opening night. Mavericks Look More Justified As Klays Fresh Start Gets Off Track

Klay Thompsons move to Miami was supposed to give him a cleaner runway after Dallas bought him out in the wake of the Luka Doncic trade and the Mavericks broader roster reset. From the Mavericks side, the split made sense as their direction no longer lined up with Thompsons goals, and his final season in Dallas offered little argument for keeping the partnership intact.

Early returns in Miami, though, have been uneven enough to make Dallas decision look even more reasonable in hindsight. Thompson has struggled to find a rhythm in preseason, and the rough start has only added weight to a final year in Dallas that already ended with career lows in scoring and shooting efficiency. Kyrie Irving Still Leaves Mavericks Facing One Huge Opening Night Question

Kyrie Irving is back in the conversation for Dallas as the Mavericks look ahead to the 2026-27 season, and his return could end up shaping everything about their offense. After a disappointing year, the hope inside the organization is that a healthy Irving gives the group the shot creation and late-game juice it lacked for long stretches.

Still, the biggest question hanging over opening night is less about whether Irving is on the roster and more about what version of him shows up after the long recovery from a torn ACL. Shawn Marion recently pointed to the uncertainty around Irving regaining his old form, even while acknowledging the work he has put in during rehab, leaving Dallas with optimism and a fair amount of suspense as the season approaches.
