Mavericks Just Got A Kyrie Twist That Changes This Cooper Flagg Debate

Kyrie Irving's potential move to the Miami Heat is gaining traction amidst speculation about the Mavericks' long-term strategy and roster dynamics.

Kyrie Irving’s name is back in the middle of the trade conversation, and Miami has emerged as the latest destination getting attention.

The chatter picked up after Shams Charania reported that the Miami Heat are monitoring Irving’s situation with the Dallas Mavericks. Now, a source has gone a step further, saying Irving would be open to ending up in South Beach.

“I think we’ve both heard he’s interested in playing down in Miami. I also know Spoelstra holds him in very high regard. - All indications are that this is a place he’d be comfortable,” said Ethan J. Skolnick, the CEO of 5 Reasons Sports from Miami.

He added, “My thought is, I don’t think anything is imminent. I think the Heat are going to let this play out a little bit and see if Larsson can make the leap,” he further added.

That interest comes at a time when Dallas is trying to sort out its own direction. The Mavericks are being pulled between two timelines, and the big question is whether they want to keep building around Irving or shift their attention toward Cooper Flagg.

If that sounds familiar, it should. The situation has drawn comparisons to what happened with the Lakers, who had to choose between Luka Doncic and LeBron James. In that case, the franchise ultimately leaned younger, going with Doncic and not extending James.

A similar decision could be waiting in Dallas if Irving and Flagg don’t look like a combination that can push the Mavericks into playoff contention. Irving is in the final guaranteed season of his deal, with a $42.4 million player option for 2027-28, which only adds to the uncertainty.

At the same time, the Mavericks have publicly backed Irving. Earlier this season, the front office said he remains a central part of their long-term plans. Irving has also said he wants to stay in Dallas long-term, even after missing most of his time there because of his ACL injury.

He’s still shaking off some rust after that 18-month absence. Through this stretch, Irving is averaging 18.0 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.3 rebounds while shooting 49.1% from the field and 33.3% from three.

If Dallas eventually decides to move him, Miami would make sense as a landing spot. The Heat are looking for a point guard who can steady the offense for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, and Irving fits that description.

The road there would depend on the Heat putting together a trade package that gets Dallas’ attention. For now, though, the situation appears to be in wait-and-see mode, with Irving’s future tied to how the Mavericks build around Flagg and whether Miami keeps pushing toward him.

Cooper Flagg And Kyrie Irving Are Setting A New Mavericks Tone

A year after a 26-56 finish sent the Mavericks into a round of front office and coaching changes, the early return has been as much about tone as talent. Cooper Flagg is off to a strong start in his second season, and he has already pointed to a healthier atmosphere around the team, one centered on winning and competition rather than the drift that too often accompanied last season.

Kyrie Irving has helped shape that message, too, by making it clear he is committed to Dallas despite the trade talk that tends to follow a star in his position. Mavericks president Masai Ujiri has publicly backed him, and head coach Dusty May has emphasized Irvings leadership, giving the franchise a veteran voice to go with Flaggs rise. The bigger question now is how long this new balance can hold, especially with so much attention still attached to the names at the center of it. [Read more 🡒]

Zaccharie Risacher Is Giving The Mavericks Something They Suddenly Need

Zaccharie Risacher has quickly started looking like more than just a useful depth piece for Dallas. Early in the season, he has given the Mavericks a real jolt on the defensive end, and his energy has stood out enough that teammates and coaches have taken notice. For a team that has needed more reliable two-way help off the bench, that kind of activity has become a welcome development.

Risacher has also looked more comfortable on the offensive end, especially when spotting up and letting his catch-and-shoot chances come to him. That progress matters because it gives Dallas a cleaner path to keeping him on the floor, not just as a hustle player but as someone who can fit into the rotation without hesitation. The bigger question now is how far that growth can go, and how the Mavericks choose to lean into it as they sort out their bench going forward. [Read more 🡒]

Dwight Powells Next Move Will Hit Mavericks Fans Hard

Dwight Powell is moving toward the next chapter of a career that was defined for so long by one jersey. After being waived by the Mavericks before the regular season, the veteran big man is now linked to Fenerbahce, a powerhouse club in Istanbul with a roster that includes several former NBA players. For Dallas fans, it is the kind of update that lands with a little extra weight because Powell spent nearly his entire 12-year NBA career in a Mavericks uniform.

The move also points Powell toward a new stage of basketball he has not yet experienced. Fenerbahce gives him a chance to stay in a top-tier setting overseas, and the transition would place him in one of the most respected leagues in the world. It is a notable turn for a player who became such a familiar part of the Mavericks identity, even if the full shape of his next stop is still coming into focus. [Read more 🡒]
