P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford have spent the summer in trade chatter, but the Dallas Mavericks don’t sound eager to move either one just to clear the logjam in their frontcourt. According to NBA reporter Jake Fischer, Dallas is holding firm and wants first-round pick value if it’s going to part with either veteran.
“I do think (the Mavs) are open to trading veterans like P.J. Washington, like Klay Thompson, like Daniel Gafford for the right price,” Fischer said on a Bleacher Report video.
“What is that price? The Mavericks - it dates back to a different front office regime - they’ve been asking for a first round pick for Daniel Gafford for a while now.
I’m sure it’s roughly similar value for P.J. Washington.”
That stance makes sense given where Dallas sits. The roster is crowded up front, and plenty of fans have expected one of the two to be moved in exchange for a guard. But the Mavericks don’t appear interested in selling low, even with the frontcourt looking packed.
It was also reported that Masai Ujiri covets Washington and his playstyle, which only adds another wrinkle to the situation. So while a move has felt inevitable for months, it wouldn’t be a shock if Washington and Gafford are both still on the opening night roster.
There’s a case for patience with both players. Washington is coming off a season in which he shot 32.5 percent from outside, and Dallas could try to rebuild some of that trade value if it chooses to revisit the market later. Gafford, meanwhile, was injury-riddled all of last season.
The bigger picture matters here, too. Washington and Gafford are both in the middle of their primes, and if Dallas does decide to deal them, it wants premium draft capital that can help it build around Cooper Flagg going forward. Taking an average offer now could do more damage than good.
Even after adding Morez Johnson Jr. and Santi Aldama to the frontcourt mix, it wouldn’t be surprising if Washington and Gafford opened the season as Dallas’ starters at the four and five. That might not be the long-term answer, but both have been among the team’s most battle-tested players outside of Kyrie Irving and Thompson, and they can be a punishing defensive pair when healthy and fully engaged.
Dereck Lively II also doesn’t look ready for the start of the season, which makes Dallas even less likely to rush into a trade unless another team comes with an intriguing young player and a first-round pick.
New head coach Dusty May will have plenty to sort through with the frontcourt rotation, especially with the possibility of some huge lineups. Aldama adds shooting, which gives those combinations more flexibility.
For fans frustrated that nothing has happened yet, Dallas may simply be doing the smart thing. The Mavericks don’t project as contenders next season, so there’s no need to force a deal. Washington and Gafford both signed contract extensions last season, and Dallas can afford to see how they fit alongside a healthy Irving and second-year Flagg before deciding whether either player’s true trade value has been reached.
