The Dallas Mavericks' 2025-26 season might not be going as planned, but rookie sensation Cooper Flagg is giving fans something to cheer about. Drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in 2025, Flagg has been a standout, initially leading the charge for the NBA's Rookie of the Year (ROTY) honors. However, the spotlight has recently shifted to Charlotte Hornets' Kon Knueppel, who has caught the eye of Mavericks' head coach Jason Kidd.
It's a fascinating twist of fate as these two former Duke teammates now find themselves in a head-to-head race for ROTY. Knueppel is having a stellar season, putting up 19.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, with an impressive shooting efficiency of 48.9 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from three-point range. Meanwhile, Flagg is not far behind, averaging 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, shooting 47.4 percent from the field.
Coach Kidd has emphasized the importance of supporting Flagg in his ROTY quest. “It's a big priority for the organization,” Kidd stated.
“But it's not just on us. Cooper's got to do his part, and he is.
He's having a historic rookie year. When you compare his stats to past ROTY winners, he's clearly leading the pack.”
The ROTY race seems destined to be a battle between these two talented players, but the context of their teams' performances might play a role. While the Mavericks are struggling with a 24-50 record, the Hornets are in the playoff hunt, sitting as the eighth seed in the East.
Kidd acknowledges the complexity of the voting process. “Everyone has their opinion on what matters most-popularity, trends,” he remarked.
“Knueppel's having a fantastic season, no doubt. But when you look at the numbers, Cooper’s are right up there with the best.”
As the season winds down, all eyes will be on Flagg and Knueppel to see who ultimately takes home the Rookie of the Year award.
