The NBA is exploring three intriguing strategies to curb the trend of teams tanking towards the end of the regular season, a tactic aimed at improving draft lottery odds. With a particularly promising draft class on the horizon, the temptation to tank is stronger than ever, and the Dallas Mavericks are among those feeling the pull this season.
Despite the Mavs grappling with significant injuries that have hampered their competitiveness, the allure of a top-heavy draft class offers a silver lining to their 23-50 record. For fans, this reality is all too familiar.
However, the NBA is taking steps to address this mindset as more teams prioritize future potential over present performance. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the league recently discussed three anti-tanking strategies that could be implemented following a formal vote in May. Let’s break down these options and consider their potential impact on the Mavericks.
Option 1 - Flattened Lottery Odds
Charania outlines a plan where 18 teams enter the draft lottery, with seeds 7-15 from each conference included. The bottom 10 teams would each have an 8% chance at the top pick, while the remaining odds are distributed among teams 11 through 18. This approach adds complexity by including teams that might otherwise make the playoffs through the Play-In Tournament.
For the Mavericks, who currently hold a 9.0% chance at the top pick, this change introduces more unpredictability. It mirrors last year's scenario when Dallas defied the odds to draft Duke star Cooper Flagg with just a 1.8% chance. While this system increases randomness, it could also disrupt the intended benefit for the league's weakest teams.
Option 2 - Two-Year Records
In this proposal, 22 teams would enter the lottery based on a two-year performance record, incorporating seeds 7-15 and the first-round playoff exits from both conferences. A minimum win total, such as 25 wins per season, would be required to maintain lottery eligibility.
This method assesses teams over a longer period to determine their need for top draft picks. However, it raises questions about long-term tanking strategies. For the Mavericks, the potential return of key players like Kyrie Irving and Dereck Lively II, alongside rising talents like Flagg, suggests they might not remain in this year's predicament for long.
Option 3 - The 5x5
Here, 18 teams participate in a "5 by 5" lottery, where the bottom five teams have equal odds for the top pick. The lottery determines picks 1-5, with a minimum floor at 10 for the bottom teams. This approach aims to prevent teams from making an unexpected leap in the lottery standings, which could negatively impact others.
While this method could reduce the number of teams aiming for the bottom five, it doesn't entirely eliminate the incentive to tank. For teams like the 2024-25 Mavs, it might slightly alter the end-of-season dynamics but won't fully solve the tanking dilemma.
As the NBA continues to refine its approach to tanking, the Mavericks and other teams will need to navigate these potential changes, balancing immediate challenges with long-term aspirations.
