Dwight Powell’s run in Dallas appears to be over, and his next stop is coming overseas.
The longtime Mavericks center, a 12-year veteran and one of the franchise’s most familiar faces, did not make the team’s roster after signing a training camp deal before the season. Dallas had already filled all 15 guaranteed contract spots, and keeping Powell would have meant cutting one of those players. Instead, the Mavericks moved on.
Powell’s exit closes the door on what had been a possible 13th season with the only NBA team he has ever played for. He was brought back late, just as camp opened, with a chance to fight for a roster spot.
But the path was always going to be steep. With Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II healthy, plus the additions of Santi Aldama and Morez Johnson Jr., his chances of carving out minutes were slim.
NBC Sports’ Raphielle Johnson noted that Powell “appeared in 63 games last season, starting 12, and averaged 3.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.”
The Mavericks ultimately waived him, and that opened the door to his next move. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, “Source close to talks confirms Dwight Powell is signing with Turkish power Fenerbahçe to play for Šarūnas Jasikevičius. After 12 years in Dallas, Powell could not force his way onto the Mavs' roster in training camp with 15 guaranteed contracts ahead of him.”
That landing spot gives Powell a chance to keep playing at a high level. Fenerbahçe has won two EuroLeague titles, so the veteran center is stepping into a situation with championship expectations.
For now, Powell’s NBA chapter is on pause after a 12-year stretch in Dallas. Whether this becomes the end of his time in the league or just a detour, his next move is clear: he’s heading to Turkey for a fresh start.

Kyrie And Cooper Flagg Already Raise A Big Mavericks Debate
Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg have barely had time to settle in as a duo, but the early signs around Dallas are already hard to ignore. Their games seem to mesh in a way that gives the Mavericks a different kind of balance, with Flagg bringing energy on the defensive end and in transition while Irving supplies the kind of shot creation that can make any lineup look more dangerous.
It is still early, of course, and the pair has not come close to matching the level of success Irving once had with Luka Doncic. Even so, the fit has been encouraging enough to spark a bigger question in Dallas: if this partnership keeps trending the way it has, could it be the one that helps push the Mavericks back into the playoffs? Cooper Flagg Just Drew The Kind Of Praise Mavericks Fans Dream About
Cooper Flaggs start to his second NBA season has already put him in the kind of conversation Mavericks fans love to hear, the one where a young star is judged not just by flashes, but by how complete his game looks. After a Rookie of the Year season in 2025-26, Flagg has opened 2026-27 averaging 26.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game, and the buzz around him has only grown as his impact has shown up in more than one area of the floor.
Max Kellerman added to that momentum with a strong endorsement, praising Flagg for the way he affects games without relying on a single defining trait. He compared Flagg favorably to NBA stars and pointed to the blend of scoring, playmaking and two-way value that has made the Mavericks forward such an early headline-grabber, the sort of player who can make a national analyst sound like he is already looking several years ahead. Opening night of the 2026 NBA Cup had no shortage of noise around the league, and Dallas had its own reason to feel good after taking care of Houston. The Mavericks got a 116-111 win over the Rockets, with Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving combining for 68 points in a performance that fit the kind of early-season statement the team has been looking to make.
Elsewhere, the Bulls kept sliding with another loss, this time to the Celtics, as frustration around Chicago continued to build. Across the rest of the slate, the Warriors erased a big first-quarter hole to beat the Lakers behind Stephen Currys 31 points, Luka Doni poured in 37 in defeat, and Kevin Durant delivered a highlight dunk in Houstons loss, making Dallas result stand out as one of the cleaner wins on a busy night.
