The Lakers are back in the mix as the trade deadline heats up, and this time, their eyes are on a rising two-way talent: Jonathan Kuminga.
According to league sources, Los Angeles is among the teams keeping close tabs on Kuminga’s situation. The 21-year-old forward became trade-eligible earlier this month, and with a formal trade request now on the table, conversations that had been simmering quietly are starting to pick up steam.
From a front-office perspective, Kuminga’s contract is a major part of the intrigue. He’s currently on a two-year deal worth about $46.8 million, with a team option for the 2026-27 season at $24.3 million.
That kind of structure gives potential buyers something every GM wants this time of year: flexibility. Teams aren’t locked into a long-term commitment, but they still get control over a high-upside player.
That’s a rare and valuable combo in a league where cap space and optionality can be as important as talent.
Golden State, for its part, is reportedly looking to keep any return centered around expiring or short-term contracts. That narrows the field a bit, ruling out teams that would need to take on long-term money or get overly creative to make the math work. But it also opens the door for a team like the Lakers, who have the financial structure and roster pieces to pull off a deal without too much gymnastics.
And when you look at what the Lakers are prioritizing - athleticism, defensive versatility, and wing depth - Kuminga fits the mold. He’s long, explosive, and has shown flashes of becoming a true two-way force. That’s exactly the kind of profile Los Angeles wants to slot in next to Luka Doncic and their current core.
They’re not alone in their interest. Both the Mavericks and Kings have reportedly monitored Kuminga’s availability.
Sacramento, in particular, has had interest dating back some time. But while the curiosity is there, neither team is currently seen as driving the market.
The Kings’ asset pool remains limited, which could hinder their ability to make a serious push.
For now, nothing appears imminent. But as the deadline draws closer and Golden State weighs its options, the Lakers are well-positioned to be a serious player in any Kuminga discussions. If the Warriors decide to pick up the phone, Los Angeles won’t hesitate to answer.
