The Mavericks are heading into Monday with momentum and a chance to keep their early-season surge rolling, but the bigger question hanging over the night is Kyrie Irving.
Dallas has opened October at 4-2, a start that looks even better when you consider how demanding the schedule was. Now the path eases up a bit, beginning with a trip to face a Sacramento team that is still searching for its first win at 0-6. For the Mavericks, this is the kind of game that can’t slip away if they want to keep moving up in the Western Conference.
Irving’s status adds the most intrigue. Dallas has listed him as questionable, continuing a cautious approach as he works his way back after tearing his ACL in March of 2025 and missing all of last season.
The matchup carries extra weight for him, too, because that injury happened against the Kings. On that play, his foot landed on top of then-Kings center Jonas Valanciunas’ foot, and Irving came down awkwardly.
He went to the floor immediately, but still stayed in the game long enough to shoot his free throws before heading to the locker room.
A return against Sacramento would be a full-circle moment, but the Mavericks have been careful with him all season and have mostly listed him as doubtful. They’re clearly treating his recovery one game at a time and aren’t looking to push him before they have to. Even without him, Dallas should feel good about its chances in this one.
The timing does make his availability more interesting. The Mavericks had the full weekend off and won’t play again tomorrow because of voting, so there’s no shortage of rest built into the schedule. That’s why seeing Irving suit up would be a welcome development.
There are a few other notable names on the Dallas side. Naji Marshall, who had missed the last few games with an illness, is no longer on the injury report and should be available. Caleb Martin is also set to play despite a right thumb sprain, and he has been productive since debuting.
On the other side, Santi Aldama is doubtful while recovering from knee surgery, though his debut appears to be getting closer. Tarik has not played this season because of right heel bursitis and has now been ruled out for this one after being listed as doubtful in recent games.
Sergio De Larrea remains sidelined with a right knee sprain, but he is scheduled to be re-evaluated this week, which suggests the issue may not be serious. Dereck Lively II is still out as he works back from foot surgery.
Sacramento’s injury list is also crowded. Center Maxime Raynaud is out with a right patellar subluxation, and Ben Simmons remains sidelined after tearing his Achilles in the preseason. Zach LaVine, dealing with right elbow inflammation, and Dylan Cardwell, who has a left calf strain, are both questionable.

Kyrie Irvings Surge Has Mavericks Fans Watching One Crucial Thing
Kyrie Irvings season-high 35-point night offered the Mavericks a reminder of what he can still bring offensively while he works his way back from a torn ACL. More important for Dallas, it was another sign that the guard is settling into the rhythm of the season and finding a better balance between production and the daily grind of recovery.
Irving has talked about the mental and physical fatigue that comes with that process, saying his goal is to keep playing without overthinking the injury. He has also expressed confidence in the Mavericks medical and coaching staff as he continues to build his conditioning, which makes every strong outing feel like part of a larger test of how quickly he can sustain this level. Cooper Flagg Is Already Changing What Dallas Can Dream About
Cooper Flagg has already given Dallas a different kind of optimism to talk about, the sort that goes beyond a hot start or a few eye-catching highlights. Through the opening stretch of the season, he has looked like a player who can tilt games in multiple ways, piling up points, handling the ball and helping on the glass while also showing up well in the advanced numbers that tend to separate real impact from empty production.
For the Mavericks, the bigger question is no longer whether Flagg belongs in the conversation around the leagues rising stars, but how high that conversation can go if this keeps up. It is still early, and plenty can change over the course of a season, but the early returns have already pushed Dallas into a more ambitious place than many expected when the year began. Kyrie Irving's Hot Start Just Raised Dallas' Biggest Deadline Dilemma
Kyrie Irvings strong start has only sharpened the conversation around what the Mavericks do next. He has said he is committed to Dallas despite the trade chatter, and for now he remains one of the key pieces in the teams backcourt, giving the offense a level of shot-making and late-clock security that is hard to replace. But with his long-term future still unclear, every bit of production only seems to add to the sense that Dallas is sitting on a complicated decision rather than a simple one.
Around the league, Irving is viewed as the kind of player who could draw serious interest if the Mavericks decide to listen before the deadline. The appeal is obvious: a proven scorer, a high-end creator and a name that would instantly change a contenders outlook. For Dallas, the real question is whether the value of keeping him for a playoff push outweighs the possibility of getting a major return if the right offer comes along. [Read more 🡒]
