Klay Thompson has done little to quiet the chatter linking him to the Los Angeles Lakers.
On August 10, 2026, Thompson posted an Instagram story reacting to a fan-made NBA 2K simulation that placed him in a Lakers uniform with Magic Johnson, James Worthy, A.C. Green, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. In the video, the simulated version of Thompson put up 23.1 points per game for a 61-21 team that went on to win the championship.
Thompson’s caption did the heavy lifting. He wrote, “This is what my dreams look like on a consistent basis”. He never flat-out said he wants to join the Lakers, but the message was enough to keep the speculation rolling.
The timing matters, too. Thompson is in the final season of the three-year, $50 million contract he signed in 2024 with the Mavericks, and Dallas has already explored the trade market for the 36-year-old without landing a deal.
Reports have also said Thompson wants to return to Los Angeles, where he grew up and still owns a home. For now, the Lakers and the Miami Heat are both said to be interested.
The Lakers talk picked up another layer because of Thompson’s father, Mychal Thompson. A Lakers legend who won two championships with the team and now works as the radio broadcaster, Mychal has been leaning into the conversation on social media. When a fan told him to “get back on it” about Lakers interest in his son, he answered, “I’m TRYING” after a fan asked him on social media to “get back on it”, regarding the Lakers interest in his son.
He also responded to another fan who wrote, “now that LeBron is not a Laker, you can tell Klay he can join the Lakers franchise as an LA kid”, replying, “Ahhhh thank u my frend… It wud be a Dream come true.”
Dallas, meanwhile, does not want to move Thompson via buyout and would rather work out a trade as it reshapes the roster around rookie Cooper Flagg.
For now, Thompson’s future is still unresolved. But his message - and the family noise around it - has kept the Lakers rumor mill spinning.
