Jason Kidd Hints At Naji Marshall Contract Shift

As the Mavericks contemplate roster moves, Jason Kidd's strategic approach to Naji Marshall's performance and potential contract extension could shape the team's future dynamics.

Jason Kidd Backs Naji Marshall for Mavs' Future: A Closer Look

The Dallas Mavericks might be navigating a tough season with a 24-50 record, but there are silver linings on the horizon, especially as they eye the NBA Draft and the 2026-27 season. Among these positives is the standout performance of Naji Marshall, a player who’s catching the attention of Coach Jason Kidd.

Kidd recently highlighted the importance of evaluating players who are playing for contract extensions, and Marshall is at the forefront of this conversation. Now in his sixth NBA season, Marshall is in the second year of a three-year, $27 million deal.

With his current contract running through the 2026-27 season, he’s set to earn $9.4 million next year. However, come July 2026, Marshall is eligible for a contract extension, and Kidd seems eager to see that happen.

Marshall’s potential new deal could be a four-year, $56.8 million contract. Alternatively, if he waits until July 2027, the Mavericks could use his Full Bird rights to offer a five-year deal worth up to $73.9 million. This flexibility stems from what’s been described as a "statistical explosion" in his performance.

During his time with the New Orleans Pelicans, Marshall averaged 7.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in just under 20 minutes per game. Since joining the Mavericks, he’s nearly doubled those stats, now boasting 14.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. This season alone, he’s averaging 15.5 points.

Marshall attributes his improvement to a deeper understanding of the game. “Just reading the game a little bit more,” he explained.

He’s become adept at assessing the floor, engaging his team, and exploiting defensive schemes. His versatility has been a key asset for the Mavericks, allowing him to adapt to various roles, whether starting in the backcourt or adding physicality to a smaller lineup.

Marshall’s ability to handle the ball and his defensive prowess have made him indispensable. “I just love the game, and I’m a student of the game,” he shared, emphasizing his multifaceted approach and experience in different positions.

His impact hasn’t gone unnoticed by teammates, including rookie Cooper Flagg. “Naji is always living up to the moment,” Flagg remarked. “He’s been a great motor for us throughout this year.”

As the Mavericks look to rebuild and strengthen their roster, Marshall’s growth and potential extension could be pivotal in shaping their future. With Kidd’s backing and Marshall’s continued development, the Mavs have a promising piece in place as they plan for the seasons ahead.
