Ja Morant Draws Lukewarm Trade Interest Amid Surprising Three-Week Setback

As Ja Morant recovers from injury amid growing tension in Memphis, tepid trade interest complicates an already uncertain future for the former No. 2 pick.

Ja Morant’s future in Memphis is looking more uncertain by the day - and not just because of his current injury. The Grizzlies star is expected to miss the next three weeks with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, and while he recovers, the trade chatter around him is heating up, albeit slowly.

According to league sources, the Grizzlies are open to moving Morant and are actively listening to offers. But so far, interest around the league has been lukewarm.

That’s a bit surprising, considering Morant’s résumé: a two-time All-Star, former Rookie of the Year, and one of the most explosive guards in the game when healthy. He’s under contract for $39.4 million this season and doesn’t have a no-trade clause, meaning Memphis has flexibility if the right deal comes along.

What’s becoming increasingly clear is that both sides may be ready for a fresh start. Multiple sources have indicated that Morant and the Grizzlies share a mutual interest in parting ways.

And behind the scenes, there appears to be some friction between Morant and first-year head coach Tuomas Iisalo. Morant reportedly isn’t a fan of Iisalo’s rotation strategy - quick shifts and mass substitutions - which he feels has disrupted his rhythm and made it difficult to find his footing on the floor.

From a production standpoint, Morant has had an up-and-down season. In 20 games, he’s averaging 19.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per game.

The playmaking is still there, but the shooting numbers have taken a hit - just 41.0% from the field and 23.5% from deep. His free-throw shooting, though, remains strong at nearly 90%.

For a player who thrives on pace and timing, the lack of consistency in his minutes may be part of the story.

At 26 years old, Morant is still in his prime and has career averages of 22.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 7.4 assists. He’s been the face of the franchise since being drafted second overall in 2019 out of Murray State.

But outside of a run to the second round in 2022, team success has been limited. And with the Grizzlies currently sitting 12th in the Western Conference standings, the front office is reportedly prioritizing future assets - namely young players and draft picks - as they evaluate offers.

Several teams have been linked to Morant in trade rumors, including the Bucks, Raptors, Kings, Heat, and Pelicans. Whether any of those teams are willing to meet Memphis’ asking price remains to be seen.

But with the trade deadline looming on February 5 at 3 p.m. ET, the clock is ticking.

Morant’s talent isn’t in question. He’s a dynamic offensive weapon with the ability to take over games and ignite a fanbase.

The bigger question is fit - both with the Grizzlies’ current direction and with potential suitors. If Memphis does pull the trigger, it could reshape not just their future, but the balance of power in the league.
