Heat 0-2 Start Fuels Buzz About Another Star Next To Giannis

The Miami Heat, off to a rocky start, might shake things up by eyeing Kyrie Irving to bolster their new lineup with Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Miami Heat’s 0-2 start hasn’t stopped the speculation from spinning in a big way. After one of the busiest offseasons in the league, Miami already looks like a team willing to swing for more - and now there’s chatter that another major move could be on the table.

The Heat’s summer centerpiece was a blockbuster trade for NBA champion Giannis Antetokounmpo. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the deal this way: “The Milwaukee Bucks are trading franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (including No. 13 in Tuesday's NBA draft), one pick swap and one second-round pick, sources told ESPN. The Heat are sending to Milwaukee unprotected first-rounders in 2031 and 2033 along with No. 13, a pick swap in 2030 and a 2033 second-rounder, according to sources,”

But that may not be where Miami stops. CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn floated the idea of the Heat going after Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving, arguing the Mavericks could be pushed toward extracting future value where they can.

“He's 34 and his team's franchise player is 19. Timeline issues don't need to be deal-breakers, but the Mavericks don't control their own first-round pick again until 2031.

They have to find longer-term assets where they can, and Irving is their most desirable trade piece. The Heat are fairly asset-depleted, but would surely offer what they could,” Quinn wrote.

A move for Irving would give Miami another seasoned shot-creator to pair with Antetokounmpo, though any deal would hinge on Dallas being willing to move him and the Heat finding a package the Mavericks would accept.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst also noted the tension around Dallas’ direction, writing, “Ujiri has made it clear that the franchise is committed to keeping Irving with Flagg, who is 15 years younger than the star point guard," ESPN's Brain Windhorst wrote."Rival front offices question whether Dallas can stick to that plan with roster holes elsewhere and the two stars on different career timelines.”

For Miami, the appeal is obvious: another proven veteran could deepen the rotation and add more options alongside Antetokounmpo. Davion Mitchell would still be in line to supply energy and playmaking with the second unit, but the Heat already have veterans in place and could keep chasing more experience if the right deal presents itself.

Cooper Flaggs Status Suddenly Looms Large For Mavericks Vs Heat

Cooper Flaggs availability is suddenly a major subplot for the Mavericks as they get set to face the Heat, with the rookie listed as questionable because of a mild left shoulder sprain. Dallas has already ruled him out once since the injury, and the team said he will be re-evaluated this week, leaving his status unsettled as the game approaches.

The issue started in the matchup with Indiana, when Flagg took a hard foul and did not return, and it has quickly turned into one of the more important health questions on the roster. The Mavericks have been in contact with the public about his status, but for now the focus is simply on whether he can make it back in time for Miami or whether the team will have to wait a little longer. Mavericks Just Took Another Fascinating Flier On Former Lottery Talent

Jeremy Sochan is getting another chance to reset his career path, this time through the Mavericks' developmental pipeline. The Texas Legends used their top pick in the 2026 NBA G League Draft on the former lottery talent, giving Dallas a low-cost look at a player who once arrived in the league with real promise and even earned All-Rookie Second Team honors.

For the Mavericks, the appeal is obvious: there is little downside in bringing in a young, proven prospect and seeing whether a fresh environment can unlock more of his game. Sochan was most recently with the Portland Trail Blazers, and now the focus shifts to what he can do with the Legends as Dallas continues searching for usable NBA help wherever it can find it. Mavs New Arena Push Is Turning Into A Bigger Dallas Fight

The Mavericks push for a new arena in North Dallas has grown into more than a basketball discussion, becoming a broader civic conversation about what kind of development should define that part of the city. Team officials are pitching a multi-billion dollar project that would go well beyond game nights, with the goal of making it a long-term community asset centered on basketball and related activities.

For Dallas fans, the timing matters because the current setup at American Airlines Center still has years left before the teams lease runs out, and the new building is being framed as the next chapter rather than an immediate move. Even so, the project has drawn extra attention because of the ownership change and the speculation that followed, leaving the arena plan to carry a bigger public burden than most stadium proposals.
