Daniel Gafford Is Forcing A Mavericks Rethink In The Paint

Deck: As Daniel Gafford continues to excel for the Dallas Mavericks, his performance is prompting a reevaluation of his trade status amidst a season of pivotal contributions.

Daniel Gafford is making it harder and harder for the Mavericks to even entertain the idea of moving him.

The Dallas big man has opened the season playing some of the best basketball of his career, putting up 10.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.9 blocks per game while shooting a career-high 75.0 percent from the field. That kind of production has given Dallas a steady presence in the paint on both ends, especially with Dereck Lively II still sidelined as he works back from a foot injury that has kept him out since November of last year.

That absence has only sharpened the value of what Gafford is bringing. Dallas has leaned on him as its most dependable interior option, and the front office’s earlier willingness to shop him now looks a lot less relevant.

The Mavericks had kept Gafford on the trade block for multiple years after acquiring him in February 2024, and they stayed open to moving him this offseason as well. Even the team’s new front office, led by Masai Ujiri, ultimately decided to keep him.

Lately, Gafford has looked like exactly the kind of player a team wants to hold onto. Over his last two games, he has totaled 38 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks, with Monday night’s matchup against the Sacramento Kings standing out as his best showing of the season.

He finished with 20 points and did most of his damage right at the rim. Gafford converted multiple reverse layups, finished a lob from Cooper Flagg, and knocked down an and-one fadeaway jumper over Domantas Sabonis from the middle of the lane. Sabonis had trouble keeping him out of the paint, and Gafford’s energy left its mark even though Dallas came away with a loss.

For a Mavericks team still looking for consistency inside, that matters. Morez Johnson Jr. is still working through early growing pains, and the frontcourt has been hit hard by injuries, with Santi Aldama and Lively both yet to play. In that mix, Gafford has been the stabilizing force.

At this point, Dallas should only consider moving him if an offer is truly overwhelming. After years of being viewed as a possible trade chip, Gafford’s play has pushed the Mavericks toward a different conclusion: keep him.

Luka Doncic Trade Frustration Just Surfaced In An Unexpected Mavericks Clip

A routine arrest in Royse City, Texas, has turned into an odd little Mavericks footnote after bodycam footage from JR Smiths Sept. 29 stop started circulating. Smith was pulled over after an automated license plate reader flagged his vehicle because of an active warrant tied to an alleged incident on Sept. 18, and the video quickly drifted away from the arrest itself as the officer on scene began talking basketball.

For Dallas fans, the surprising part is how the conversation veered straight into the Luka Doncic trade to the Lakers and the lingering frustration around it. The officer offered his own strong take on the deal and also brought up the Mavericks coaching choices around Doncic, turning an otherwise routine police clip into another reminder of how much that transaction still hangs over the franchise. Mavericks May Be Feeling Better About This Top 10 Pick

Morez Johnson Jr. is starting to give the Mavericks a little more reason to feel good about the ninth overall pick they used in the 2026 NBA draft. Early in the season, the rookie has averaged 7.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, and his role has already begun to take shape as a physical, defense-first presence who can do some of the dirty work around the edges.

Against Sacramento, Johnson offered another reminder of why Dallas liked his upside, showing off the kind of defensive versatility and toughness that can translate quickly at the NBA level. He also appears to be settling in well next to Cooper Flagg in a complementary role, and while there is still plenty of development ahead, the early signs suggest the Mavericks may have found a useful piece rather than just a long-term project. Kyrie Irving Is Giving Mavericks Fans Another Reason To Feel Excited

Kyrie Irving is back on the floor for Dallas, and that alone has changed the mood around the Mavericks. After missing the entire 2025-26 season while recovering from ACL surgery, Irving has returned looking like the kind of scorer and playmaker who can tilt a night in Dallas favor. Through five games, he has been producing at a level that reminds everyone why his presence matters so much to this roster.

The on-court impact is only part of the buzz. Irving has also been getting fresh praise from two of the games biggest names, with Steve Nash and LeBron James recently discussing him on the "Mind The Game" podcast. For Mavericks fans, that kind of recognition only adds to the intrigue around what Irving can still become in Dallas, especially if this early stretch is a sign of what is coming next. [Read more 🡒]
