The Cowboys head into Week 5 with a chance to build on a 2-2 start, and Thursday night gives them a clean shot to do it. Dallas beat the Houston Texans in Week 4, then got a favorable setup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who will be without Baker Mayfield. In his place, the Bucs are turning to undrafted free agent Jalon Daniels, who is making just his second career start.
That makes this a prime spot for Dallas to handle business, but it also puts a few players squarely in the spotlight. For three Cowboys in particular, Week 5 is about more than the scoreboard.
DaRon Bland is carrying the heaviest pressure of the bunch. Joey Porter Jr.’s strong performance on Sunday helped the secondary, but it also underscored how much Bland has struggled across the last two seasons.
He continued to give up completions at a high rate in Week 4 and finished with a 48.2 PFF grade. The Cowboys gave him a major extension before the 2025 season because they expected the version of Bland they saw in 2023, when he picked off nine passes.
That level of play hasn’t returned, and there’s a real sense he may be running out of chances in Dallas.
Caleb Downs is in a different spot. The rookie has mostly been solid, and his first four games have produced 27 tackles, one sack and one pass breakup.
But Week 4 was a rough step backward. Against the Texans, he gave up five catches on five targets for 54 yards and landed in the Cowboys’ bottom five in PFF grades for the week.
That outing wasn’t typical for him, which is exactly why this game matters: he’ll be trying to show the Houston performance was the outlier.
Then there’s Jake Ferguson, who made the kind of play that can swing a game and still walked away with more questions than answers. His seven-yard catch on fourth-and-four late in the final drive was huge; without it, Dallas likely doesn’t win.
But the rest of his day was tough. Ferguson finished with three receptions for 11 yards and was a problem in run blocking.
He’s already been taking heat this season for that part of his game, along with a career-low 6.9 yards per reception, and the costly fumble in Week 3 only added to the pressure. Of the three, he may have the most to prove in Week 5.

Cowboys Pass Rush Problems Could Revive A Reunion Fans Never Expected
Four games into the 2026 season, the Cowboys pass rush has not produced the kind of pressure this defense needs, with just four sacks so far. That kind of slow start tends to get teams looking for outside help, and Bleacher Reports Kristopher Knox has already floated a familiar name as a possible fix: Jadeveon Clowney, now with the Texans, who are also sitting at 0-4.
The idea is not exactly new in Dallas, since the Cowboys have shown interest in Clowney before, but the fit is where the conversation gets tricky. Under Christian Parker, the defense has its own structure and demands, and there are real questions about how well Clowney would slot into it if the Cowboys decided to explore a trade market that suddenly feels more urgent than expected. Jerry Jones Just Put Pressure On Two New Cowboys To Deliver
The Cowboys latest additions from Pittsburgh arrive with the kind of built-in urgency that follows any move for young, talented players on rookie deals. Jerry Jones made clear the club is not treating contract talks as the immediate priority, which puts the spotlight squarely on George Pickens and Joey Porter Jr. to show they can help right away. Pickens has 225 yards and no touchdowns this season, while Porter is just getting started in Dallas after missing time because of injury.
For a team that has spent plenty of time talking about expectations, the message is simple enough: production comes first, and everything else comes later. Jones suggested any future negotiations will be shaped by how both players perform and how the team fares, so these early weeks matter. Pickens has to turn volume into impact, and Porter has to build on a delayed debut, because the Cowboys are making it clear that both newcomers will have to earn their next conversation. Cowboys Stole This Rivalry Win In A Way Texans Fans Will Hate
The Cowboys walked out of NRG Stadium with a 34-30 rivalry win over the Texans, and it came with the kind of late-game finish that tends to linger in this series. Dak Prescott found CeeDee Lamb for the touchdown that sealed it, a sequence that let Dallas leave Houston with bragging rights after a tight night in front of a split crowd feel.
Even before the final score settled in, the game had already drawn attention for a different reason when Instagram influencer Ene, better known as @truly.ene, went viral for her custom Houston Texans outfit. The look added another layer to a matchup that already had plenty of edge, and it turned the night into one of those crossover sports moments where the football result and the scene around it both got people talking.
