The San Francisco 49ers are bringing Deebo Samuel back.
After trading the wide receiver before the 2025 NFL season, the 49ers are now reuniting with him just one year later, with injuries already stacking up in camp and the receiver room looking thin. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Samuel is returning to San Francisco on a one-year deal that can rise to seven million dollars with incentives.
Samuel will be back with the franchise that drafted him in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Samuel’s return comes after a solid bounce-back year in Washington. Even with quarterback injuries affecting the Commanders, he still put together a productive 2025 season, finishing with 72 catches for 727 yards and five touchdowns. That was a clear step up from his 2024 numbers in San Francisco, when he had 51 receptions, 670 yards and three scores.

The 49ers’ need at receiver has only grown during training camp. Christian Kirk is dealing with an injury, Ricky Pearsall has knee soreness and may miss the entire season, and Jauan Jennings signed with the Minnesota Vikings in free agency.
Brandon Aiyuk’s situation has only added to the uncertainty. The veteran wideout has been in a well-publicized feud with the 49ers, wants to end up with the Commanders, and has not played since the 2024 season because of a severe knee injury. He said he will not apply for reinstatement because he does not want to do business with the 49ers.
With all of that in play, Samuel gives San Francisco a familiar option and some badly needed depth for Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
