The Cowboys’ decision to bring in Von Miller on a one-year deal has already started reshaping the edge-rusher picture in Dallas, and it may have pushed Marist Liufau toward the exit.
Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton now projects a 90% chance that the 2024 third-round pick gets traded after the Miller signing, calling it a tough fit in what has become a crowded group. Moton noted that Liufau once had a path to a back-end roster spot while he learned a new position, but Miller’s arrival changed that equation.
"Initially, Liufau had a chance to hang on to a back-end roster spot as he learns a new position, but the Cowboys signed proven pass rusher Von Miller, who led the Washington Commanders with nine sacks last year," Moton writes.
That move matters because Dallas now has a deep edge room, with Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, Malachi Lawrence, Miller, Sam Williams, and James Houston all likely sitting ahead of Liufau on the depth chart. With six options in front of him, the 87th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft is staring at an uphill battle for a roster spot.
The Cowboys could still decide to keep him and continue developing his upside, but carrying seven edge rushers would be an awkward fit. Moton suggested a rebuilding team like the Miami Dolphins could be a possible landing spot if Dallas chooses to move him.
Even if the Cowboys deal him, they likely wouldn’t get the value of the third-round selection they used on him. A Day 3 return, likely in the fourth or fifth round depending on the partner, is more realistic if they decide to move on.
For now, Liufau looks like the player squeezed hardest by the Miller addition, and Moton’s 9-out-of-10 trade projection reflects just how crowded the edge-rusher room has become.
