Troy Aikman Stays with Dolphins After Key Role in GM Search

Troy Aikman embraces an evolving role with the Miami Dolphins, balancing front-office insights with his celebrated broadcasting career.

In a surprising twist, Hall of Fame quarterback and "Monday Night Football" analyst Troy Aikman is set to continue his involvement with the Miami Dolphins in some capacity. Initially brought on as a consultant to aid in the search for a new general manager, Aikman found himself unexpectedly immersed in the role.

Reflecting on his initial hire during an episode of the “Rodeo Time” podcast, Aikman admitted, “It kind of caught me out of left field - wasn’t expecting that. But I dove into it and decided I would do it.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt like I was of some help. Where that might go, I’m not sure, but I’m going to continue to work with them.”

The Dolphins sought an external perspective with strong NFL connections, leading them to Aikman. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Aikman played a key role in supporting the hiring of former Green Bay Packers executive Jon-Eric Sullivan as the new GM.

Despite never venturing into NFL ownership or an executive role before, Aikman found the experience fulfilling, describing it as satisfying an itch he had for front-office work. Though he never pursued coaching after retiring from the Dallas Cowboys in 2000, he envisioned a future in a front-office role. However, family commitments, particularly the desire to be present for his daughters, kept him from diving into such a demanding position.

“I felt like pursuing that would be selfish,” Aikman explained.

Instead, Aikman carved out a successful broadcasting career. As he enters his 25th year in the booth with play-by-play partner Joe Buck, their partnership stands as the longest in NFL broadcasting history. Next year, they’ll team up for their seventh Super Bowl broadcast together.

“I’m very blessed; I continue to enjoy what I’m doing: broadcasting,” Aikman shared. “Love who I work with.

I’ve been working with Joe (Buck) - shoot, we’re going on our 25th year together next year. That just doesn’t happen in this business.

… It’s been awesome. I don’t know how much longer that will go - hopefully, a long time - but yeah, life’s good right now.”

Aikman’s dual roles in broadcasting and consulting for the Dolphins highlight a dynamic career that continues to evolve, keeping fans engaged and connected to the game he loves.
