Stephen Jones Silence On Pickens Signals Cowboys Shift

As the Cowboys navigate contract talks with George Pickens, Stephen Jones' newfound silence hints at a strategic shift following the missteps with Micah Parsons.

The Dallas Cowboys have long been known for their challenging contract negotiations with star players, often leading to less-than-ideal outcomes. Instead of setting the market, they frequently find themselves reacting to it, allowing other teams to take the lead.

A prime example of this was the contentious negotiations with Micah Parsons, which eventually led to his trade to Green Bay. The Cowboys' approach, often involving public commentary, has not always been well-received by players or fans.

Currently, Cowboys fans are hoping for a smoother process with All-Pro receiver George Pickens. In a shift from the usual drama, Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ Executive Vice President, has adopted a more reserved approach. At the NFL’s annual league meeting in Phoenix, he stated:

"We're just not gonna comment as we move forward on negotiations on where that stands or anything like that."

When asked about Pickens’ participation in offseason workouts without an extension, Jones kept it brief, saying, “I answered your question.”

This approach marks a departure from past practices where the Joneses have been vocal in the media. Fans might recall the chants of "Pay Micah!" during Jerry Jones' speech at last summer’s training camp, highlighting the tension around Parsons' contract.

Stephen Jones had responded to those chants by expressing a desire to pay Parsons, but also pointed out, “We want to pay Micah, too; he's got to want to be paid.”

The situation with Parsons escalated after he reportedly reconsidered a handshake agreement with Jerry Jones to consult his agent, David Mulugheta. This led to a breakdown in talks and an eventual standoff.

It seems the Cowboys’ leadership might be learning from past experiences. Jerry Jones has maintained a lower profile, and Stephen’s current reticence in the Pickens negotiation is a notable change from previous strategies. Cowboys fans are hopeful this new approach will lead to a more favorable outcome.
