Stephen A. Smith Just Sparked A New Cowboys Coaching Debate

Stephen A. Smith proposes a bold coaching change for the Dallas Cowboys as the team struggles with defensive setbacks.

Stephen A. Smith didn’t waste any time looking for a solution after the Cowboys’ latest meltdown. After Dallas coughed up a two-touchdown fourth-quarter lead in a 33-30 overtime loss to Arizona and fell to 3-5, Smith pointed straight to Rex Ryan as the answer.

On Monday’s First Take, Smith said Jerry Jones should call ESPN and try to bring Ryan in as Dallas’ defensive coordinator. He made the case that Ryan would inject the kind of edge the Cowboys are missing, even floating the idea that Ryan could make an impact with only four days to get ready.

The suggestion landed because the loss was so jarring. Dallas had started Sunday in control on defense, but the game flipped once Arizona went to Gardner Minshew.

From there, the Cardinals piled up three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, erased the Cowboys’ lead and finished the job in overtime. It came less than a week after Dallas had beaten Philadelphia on the road.

Ryan’s name carries obvious appeal. He has a long NFL track record, including two AFC Championship Game appearances as head coach of the New York Jets. But there’s a catch that makes Smith’s idea a lot harder in practice: Ryan has not coached in the NFL since his run with the Buffalo Bills ended in 2016, and it has been even longer since he worked as an NFL defensive coordinator.

That matters if the plan is for him to step in right away. He would have to get familiar with the roster, teach his system and get the defense ready on a tight schedule.

The image of Ryan bringing his trademark intensity is easy to sell. The logistics of making it happen midseason are a different story.

Dallas also isn’t operating without a defensive coordinator. Christian Parker holds that job, while the Cowboys also brought in former NFL head coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant earlier this season. Parker is still listed as the team’s coordinator.

Smith’s frustration fits the moment, but the collapse in Arizona was bigger than one headline name. The Cowboys couldn’t hold the lead, couldn’t adjust after the quarterback change and couldn’t close the game out in overtime. That leaves plenty of questions about whether the issue is the man in charge, the execution on the field, or both.

For now, Ryan is just a talking-point fix from television. Whether Dallas turns that defeat into a real change is still to be seen.

Cowboys Could Have A Tough Trade Deadline Decision Ahead

The Cowboys are heading toward the trade deadline with more questions than answers, and their uneven play has only sharpened the spotlight on how they should handle the roster. Sitting below .500, Dallas has to weigh present-day urgency against longer-term planning, which is never an easy balance when the season is already wobbling.

Terence Steele, Jonathan Mingo and Luke Schoonmaker are among the names that could come up in conversations because of where they stand on the depth chart and how the team is using them. If Dallas decides to shop any of them, the goal would be to turn current roster pieces into draft capital and give the front office more flexibility as it tries to patch holes and reshape the team moving forward. George Pickens Just Added To A Growing Cowboys Debate

George Pickens first month in Dallas has already become part of a bigger conversation about how the Cowboys want to use him, and how much patience they should have while the offense keeps searching for answers. After the Week 8 loss to Arizona, Pickens was seen heading off the field before the Cardinals game-winning field goal was even confirmed, a small moment that only added to the scrutiny around a receiver who was targeted four times and finished with two catches for 48 yards.

The bigger issue for Dallas is less about one play than the fit itself. Pickens has not been on the field as much as some teammates, and his role has not yet matched the expectations that came with his arrival, which is why his name is already surfacing in trade chatter as the Cowboys weigh what comes next. For now, it is just speculation, but it is the kind of speculation that tends to grow louder when a team is losing and one of its most talented pieces is still trying to find his place. Cowboys Suddenly Face A Franchise Crossroads After Cardinals Collapse

The Cowboys season has reached a point where every decision feels bigger than the last. At 3-5, Dallas is no longer just dealing with uneven play and defensive lapses, it is staring at a real organizational fork in the road as the trade deadline nears and the front office weighs whether this group still deserves more investment or whether the smarter move is to start thinking ahead.

George Pickens is part of that larger conversation, along with the rest of a roster that has not found enough consistency to inspire confidence. The uncertainty extends beyond personnel, too, with questions lingering around the coaching staff and whether it has enough traction to steady things. However Dallas chooses to handle the next stretch, the coming days could shape not just the rest of this season but the direction of the franchise itself. [Read more 🡒]
