One of the loudest stories in Cowboys camp right now is coming from a cornerback who is making himself impossible to overlook. Shavon Revel Jr. has been piling up strong day after strong day in Oxnard, and the second-year defender is starting to look like a real piece of Dallas’ defensive reset.
Revel is healthy, fully involved for the first time in Cowboys training camp, and showing the kind of play that made him a first-round talent at Eastern Carolina before injury concerns pushed him to the third round in the 2025 draft. What makes the rise even more striking is the setting: he’s getting this fresh start under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who has already built a reputation for bringing cornerbacks along quickly in a Vic Fangio-style system.
Parker’s track record helps explain why the Cowboys are so encouraged. In Denver in 2021, the Broncos took Patrick Surtain in the first round.
In Philadelphia in 2024, Parker was around when the Eagles doubled up on corners with Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Dallas’ first pick with Parker this spring was Caleb Downs, and he has made an early impression too.
Revel didn’t arrive as Parker’s pick, but the way this camp has unfolded has made him feel like a bonus addition that could pay off in a big way.
That matters because the Cowboys’ defense had no obvious answers last season. Now, on the eve of Dallas’ first preseason test of 2026, the picture looks very different. Undrafted carryovers like Justin Barron are making noise at linebacker, Julius Wood and Alijah Clark are flashing at safety, and Revel is helping push the cornerback group in the right direction.
The depth around him is helping, too. Cobie Durant has been productive in his first offseason with the team, DaRon Bland is healthy, and Downs has shown he can stay attached to receivers in man coverage like a natural corner. That means Revel isn’t being forced to carry the whole load by himself, even as he keeps standing out.
The matchups have been real ones. In team drills, Revel has lined up against CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and Ryan Flournoy, Dallas’ expected top trio at receiver. They bring different shapes, speeds, and styles, but the results against Revel have been steady: smooth coverage and strong hands at the catch point.
His stock climbed again after the Cowboys scrimmaged the Rams in a joint practice on Wednesday. Los Angeles brought plenty of movement, burst, and speed at him, and Revel still came out of enough of those battles looking like the better player.
Dallas went back to work Thursday in shells, and Revel kept stacking quality reps. The traits showing up over and over are simple but valuable: calm feet, trust in his athleticism, good instincts, and a willingness to attack the ball. Those are the kinds of things Parker can lean into as the defense starts to take shape for the regular season.
That versatility matters in today’s league, where corners who can handle man coverage outside or in the slot are at a premium. Revel is giving Dallas a chance to have exactly that kind of player.
It would also say something about how different this offseason has been in Dallas if Revel becomes a real plus contributor. The Cowboys have taken plenty of swings on injured or high-risk defensive prospects in the second and third rounds over the years, and those bets have not always worked out. This one is looking a lot more promising.
The team is expected to play both of its first-round picks, Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence, in Saturday’s preseason opener at the Seahawks, and last year’s top-100 defensive picks Donovan Ezeiruaku and Revel should get work as well. Revel was the biggest question mark in that group, and at times maybe the biggest question mark on the roster. Now he’s making a case to be one of the most encouraging names in the defensive rebuild.
He’ll head into Saturday’s game listed as a starter with an “or” designation next to Durant on the team’s first unofficial depth chart, released Tuesday. Durant may not need as many live reps, while Revel still needs the kind of full-speed game action that can keep speeding up his rise. Either way, he’s put himself in position to keep climbing.
And even with Durant impressing in camp, Revel edging into that conversation says plenty. This is still one of those “or” jobs, so the second boundary corner spot remains open. But the fact that Revel is even in that fight now is a strong sign of how far he’s come in a short time.
