Schottenheimer Sees One Reason Cowboys Defense Might Finally Stabilize

Cowboys' defensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer believes improved player health and strategic additions could turn around a struggling defense ranked at the bottom in several key categories.

Brian Schottenheimer isn’t pretending the Dallas Cowboys’ defense has been a fun watch through seven weeks. The numbers are rough, the production has lagged, and even a decent showing in Week 7 comes with an asterisk. But the head coach says there is at least one reason to believe the unit can climb out of the mess: health.

“You felt (DeMarvion Overshown) coming back, I thought that was great," Schotty said on 105.3 The Fan. "I think getting healthy is a big part of it."

"Overall, I think the health of this defense is what's getting us really excited," he added. "We're getting bodies back and that's huge for us."

That optimism comes with the Cowboys sitting dead-last against the run entering Week 8, along with ranking 24th in points allowed per game and 20th in pass defense. Even their better stretch from last week doesn’t fully cleanse the picture, because Dallas held the Philadelphia Eagles to 21 points while facing a depleted opponent. Philadelphia was without quarterback Jalen Hurts, top receivers DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks, and Saquon Barkley was not healthy and was in and out of the game.

Still, the injury toll on Dallas has been impossible to ignore. The defensive line, linebacker group, cornerbacks and safeties have all taken hits, with the edge rushers being the one room that has mostly stayed intact.

Jonathan Bullard has missed all but three games, though he was designated to return from injured reserve on Thursday and is on his way back. Overshown has been out for a handful of games at linebacker, and Dee Winters is now hurt and expected to miss his second game.

At cornerback, Cobie Durant has been sidelined for four games, while Joey Porter Jr. has also been dealing with injuries. The safety spot has been hit too, with Malik Hooker, Jalen Thompson and P.J.

Locke all missing time. Hooker is back, while Locke and Thompson are on injured reserve.

Locke is nearing a return after his 21-day practice window opened last week.

For now, getting healthier is one of the few things Dallas can point to as a path forward. Another would be a major trade for a difference-making edge rusher, but that’s not something the Cowboys can count on.

And even if the bodies start coming back, there’s still a larger issue hanging over the unit. Defensive coordinator Christian Parker has to make this group function better, because without that, the ceiling stays low no matter who returns.

Troy Aikman Rumor Just Reopened A Bigger Cowboys Power Debate

Troy Aikmans future has become one of those offseason Cowboys topics that says as much about the franchise as it does about the Hall of Fame quarterback. His ESPN deal is set to run through the upcoming Super Bowl, and with his next move still unclear, the conversation has drifted well beyond the broadcast booth and into the kind of power structure debate that always seems to follow Dallas.

Ed Werder poured a little cold water on the idea of Aikman simply sliding back into the organization in a ceremonial or advisory role, suggesting it would take something far bigger for that reunion to happen. The bigger question is whether Aikman would want a seat with real authority, and whether the Cowboys would ever be willing to make room for that kind of change while Jerry Jones still holds the general manager title. Cowboys O-Line Faces A Prove It Test Against Arizona

The Cowboys offensive line enters this Arizona matchup with a chance to turn good numbers into something more meaningful. After spending the 2026 season under the microscope, Dallas has a clear path to keep leaning on Javonte Williams and test a Cardinals front that could be vulnerable inside, especially if Walter Nolen III is unavailable.

Arizona still brings real stress points, though, and Budda Baker remains the kind of defender who can wreck a plan from the second level while Josh Sweat gives the Cardinals a legitimate edge threat. For Dallas, this feels like one of those games where the line has to prove it can handle movement, pressure and a defense that is looking for one big mistake to change the tone of the afternoon. Cowboys Suddenly Have A New Voice Fueling Big Playoff Belief

With the Cardinals and Colts next on the schedule, the Cowboys are trying to stack wins before the NFL trade deadline and keep their season pointed in the right direction. In the middle of that push, DeMarvion Overshown has become one of the more confident voices in the locker room, adding a little extra edge to a team that is looking to turn a good stretch into something more meaningful.

Overshowns optimism carries some weight because it comes as he works his way back from a hamstring injury and has already flashed impact in the recent win over the Eagles. His return has given Dallas another fast, disruptive presence on defense, and his belief in what this group can become hints at a bigger standard inside the building, even if the next few weeks will say plenty about how realistic that postseason talk really is.
