The Eagles are turning back to a familiar face at tight end after Dallas Goedert’s Week 2 injury left the depth chart looking thin.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Philadelphia is signing Zach Ertz to the practice squad. Schefter reported that the move comes after Goedert suffered a sprained MCL, with the Eagles now leaning on Ertz after his time with Washington.
“Three-time Pro-Bowl tight end Zach Ertz, who played in Philadelphia from 2013-‘21 and helped the team win its first Super Bowl, is returning to the city and signing with the Eagles practice squad, per sources. The Eagles lost TE Dallas Goedert to a sprained MCL and now are turning to Ertz, who spent the past two seasons in Washington,” Schefter reported.
Ertz, a former second-round pick by the Eagles in 2013, spent more than eight seasons in Philadelphia before being traded to the Arizona Cardinals in 2021. He then played more than two seasons in Arizona and spent the last two campaigns with the Washington Commanders.
His 2025 season was rolling along before it was cut short. In 13 games, Ertz totaled 50 catches for 504 yards and four touchdowns, but a torn ACL in Week 14 ended his year early.
Now healthy, the 35-year-old is set to resume his career where it began.
Goedert’s injury is the latest issue Philadelphia has dealt with at the position. Rookie Eli Stowers was placed on injured reserve before the opener, and with Goedert expected to miss a few weeks, Johnny Mundt and E.J. Jenkins are the only healthy tight ends on the 53-man roster.
Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport both reported that Goedert’s sprained MCL should keep him out for a few weeks. Schefter added, “Eagles TE Dallas Goedert is likely to miss a few weeks due to the sprained MCL he suffered Sunday vs. the Titans,”
Given the state of the position, Ertz probably won’t be parked on the practice squad for long.
