Mike Tomlin Just Added To A Cowboys Coaching Conversation

Is Mike Tomlin's criticism of the Cowboys a prelude to a move, and could his defensive prowess be the remedy for their struggles?

Mike Tomlin’s name has entered the coaching rumor mill again, and this time it’s tied to an NFC team with a head coach under pressure.

That chatter surfaced just days after Tomlin blasted the Cowboys for holding a players-only meeting following their Week 5 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dallas used that meeting to try to get a handle on its defensive issues, but Tomlin wasn’t impressed. He said a team is "dead" when they feel the need to resort to these meetings.

Now, according to NFL insider Josina Anderson, an ownership family in the NFC is keeping an eye on Tomlin as a possible replacement if its current coach doesn’t turn things around.

"I'm told by a long-time well-placed source that there's an ownership family in the NFC who is very fond of Mike Tomlin and who the source has learned is open to wooing Tomlin to their franchise to potentially replace their current head coach if the ship isn't righted for their team this season," Anderson wrote on her Substack. "As of right now, the sentiment is that this current head coach needs to make the playoffs at least to keep their job, per league source."

That naturally raises the question of Dallas. Brian Schottenheimer’s name sits at the center of the conversation, but there’s little evidence the Cowboys are ready to move on from him. He has a 9-12-1 record with the team, yet Jerry Jones and company have not appeared to put him on the hot seat.

What Dallas has focused on instead is the defense. The Cowboys recently brought in Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant, though former NFL linebacker Teddy Bruschi said that move came too late.

Schottenheimer’s job may not be in immediate danger, but another losing season would almost certainly change the temperature quickly.

If the Jones family did decide to look elsewhere, Tomlin would bring a far more accomplished résumé. During his 19 years as an NFL head coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he produced a top-10 defense 12 times and built a reputation as a no-nonsense defensive mind.

Even so, it’s hard to imagine Dallas admitting it made the wrong call on Schottenheimer this early. The more likely path is that the Cowboys stick with him through the full contract while continuing to search for answers on defense.

The Buccaneers have also come up as a possible landing spot for Tomlin. Todd Bowles is said to be on the hot seat, and the Glazer family could be willing to pursue Tomlin if he wants to coach again.

Cowboys May Be Rethinking Caleb Downs At The Worst Time

The Cowboys are heading into their next game against the Green Bay Packers with a notable adjustment in mind for rookie Caleb Downs, with the staff looking at using him differently and potentially sliding him back toward his original spot near the line of scrimmage. It is the kind of tweak that can say as much about where a defense is right now as it does about the player himself, and Dallas is making it with several contributors still sidelined by injuries.

Mike Pettines arrival as a senior defensive assistant adds another layer to the situation, giving the Cowboys another experienced voice as they sort through the latest version of their defensive puzzle. Elsewhere, the roster churn continues to be felt too, with Joe Milton having been signed off Dallas practice squad by the Philadelphia Eagles and now set to face his former team in an upcoming game. Cowboys Hit With Another Distraction Days Before Packers Game

With the Packers game looming, the Cowboys are dealing with another bit of fallout from their Week 5 win over Tampa Bay. The NFL announced its official disciplinary decisions and fined defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia $11,111 for a facemask penalty tied to unnecessary roughness in the second quarter against the Buccaneers.

The play cost Dallas a 15-yard penalty and an automatic first down for Tampa Bay, adding a little more irritation to a game already full of physical edge. It is the kind of detail that does not change the upcoming matchup on its own, but it does underscore how quickly the margins can become part of the conversation for a team trying to keep its focus on Green Bay. Former Cowboys Punters Tragic Death Brought An Emotional Family Reflection

Former NFL punter Kasey Redferns death has left a heavy mark on the football community, and for Cowboys fans it adds another somber note to a career that briefly ran through Dallas and several other NFL stops. Redfern, a Wofford product, spent time with the Jaguars, Chargers, Panthers, Browns, Lions, Cowboys and Falcons, a reminder of how many locker rooms he touched during his journey through the league.

Lauryl Redfern had shared updates as he battled brain cancer, offering a window into a fight that had become deeply personal for the family. His passing closes a difficult chapter, but it also underscores how quickly a players NFL story can become something much bigger than football, especially when the people closest to him are left carrying both the memories and the grief.
