Michael Irvin has never been shy about weighing in on Cowboys history, and this time he put CeeDee Lamb in rare air. The Hall of Fame receiver didn’t just praise Lamb - he called him the most talented No. 88 Dallas has ever had.
That’s a heavy statement in a franchise where No. 88 carries real meaning. Irvin, Drew Pearson, Dez Bryant and now Lamb all belong to that line, and Irvin made it clear where he thinks Lamb stands among them.
“The 88 we got now is the most talented of us all,” Irvin says. “Drew was all about big plays.
Small body, but he could get across that middle. I was just going to bully you.
You know, not fast, none of that. Dez was a beast playing basketball outside.
But CeeDee Lamb has all of it. He has all of it.”
Lamb’s numbers back up the idea that he has already carved out a place in Cowboys record books. He owns the team marks for receptions and receiving yards in a single season, and he became the first Cowboy to hit 7,000 career receiving yards in his first six seasons.
There’s also the reality that Lamb has done this with some strong quarterback play along the way. Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Dak Prescott have all thrown to him, but the skill set has always been there. He may not look like the biggest receiver on the field, but he wins with route running, quickness and the ability to find space in the open field.
What separates Lamb, at least in this framing, is how complete his game is. Pearson brought the deep-ball flash.
Irvin was the physical hammer. Bryant brought the tough catches.
Lamb, according to Irvin, blends those traits together and adds the kind of mentality that lets him correct his own mistakes.
Irvin’s own career gives his praise extra weight. He finished with three Super Bowl championships and a reputation that made him impossible to ignore. When he speaks about a Cowboys receiver, people notice.
For Lamb, the next step is obvious. The No. 88 legacy in Dallas is already there.
The ring is the piece still missing. And Lamb believes he can chase it with George Pickens alongside him.
