Jimmy Johnson Just Reopened A Cowboys Debate Jerry Jones Never Escaped

An unexpected revelation from former coach Jimmy Johnson puts Jerry Jones and the Cowboys in a delicate spotlight, stirring up memories of the team's past achievements.

Jimmy Johnson stirred the pot on Thursday with a social media post that put Jerry Jones back in the spotlight.

The former Dallas Cowboys coach shared an image of his old contract on X, using the language in it to push back against Jones’ version of who held the final say during the Cowboys’ dynasty years. The contract text Johnson posted spelled out broad control over football operations and personnel, including approval over coaches, player moves, and day-to-day authority with the team.

The posted contract language said:

"Johnson shall have the following duties and responsibilities: (1) No assistant football coach, trainer, equipment man or strength coach shall be fired or employed by Employer without the prior approval of Johnson.

(2) Johnson shall have the right of prior approval with respect to acquisition, releasing and trading of all football players of the Dallas Cowboys.

(3) Johnson shall have complete control of all assistant coaches, players, trainers and equipment men during training, practice, preparation for and the actual playing of games."

Clarence Hill Jr. said the Cowboys were not thrilled with Johnson putting that information out there. The NFL insider reacted on Thursday with a blunt assessment: "The cowboys are not happy with this post," Hill tweeted on Thursday.

Johnson and Jones’ partnership helped define one of the Cowboys’ best stretches. Johnson coached Dallas for five seasons, from 1989 to 1994, and the team won back-to-back Super Bowls in the 1992 and 1993 regular seasons.

The timing also landed in the middle of Dallas’ preseason work. Jones’ Cowboys beat the Seattle Seahawks 17-7 on Saturday in their 2026 preseason opener and still have two more preseason games left before the regular season begins.

Dallas’ remaining preseason dates are August 22, 2026 at 10 p.m. ET and August 28, 2026 at 8 p.m.

ET.

The Cowboys last won the Super Bowl in 1996, and they have not reached the championship game since. They also have not made the playoffs since the 2023 season.

Cowboys Could Make One More Bold Defensive Swing

The Cowboys spent the offseason trying to rework the look and feel of their defense, bringing in Christian Parker as defensive coordinator and adding multiple new pieces in an effort to raise the units ceiling. Even after that wave of change, the front office may not be done looking for help, especially at cornerback, where a proven young player could still fit into the long-term plan.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. has surfaced as a possible trade target for Dallas, with Porter entering the final year of his rookie contract and Pittsburgh potentially open to moving him. The appeal is easy to see for a Cowboys team still chasing more stability on defense, but any real pursuit would come with a price, and for now it remains only a possibility rather than a deal in motion. Cowboys Face A Few Tough Roster Calls Fans Should Watch Closely

The Cowboys are entering that part of the calendar when promise turns into math, and the numbers get tight fast. Ahead of the 2026 season, Dallas is looking at a few roster spots that could turn into real decisions, with edge rusher Williams, defensive back Bell and quarterback Milton all sitting in the mix as the team sorts out its depth chart and priorities.

Williams is fighting through a crowded edge rusher room, Bell brings the kind of versatility teams like but also has off-field issues hanging over his case, and Milton is locked in a backup quarterback battle with Sam Howell. Coaches have already weighed in on their performances, but nothing is settled yet, which is exactly what makes these calls worth watching as roster cuts draw closer. [Read more 🡒]

Jerry Jones Makes Clear Cowboys Are Not Taking This Lightly

The Cowboys heated joint practice with the Saints carried a real cost, with the NFL fining both clubs $500,000 after multiple fights broke out between the two teams. Jerry Jones called the penalty significant and said Dallas plans to appeal, a sign the organization is taking the leagues response seriously even as training camp intensity spills over the line.

Donovan Ezeiruaku is also expected to face an individual fine for his role in the incidents, adding another layer to what was already an ugly day on the practice field. For a Cowboys team trying to build momentum in camp, the episode is a reminder that the league is watching closely when emotions run high, and the fallout could linger beyond the field work itself.
