The Jets are wasting no time reshaping their offensive identity.
Just a day after parting ways with offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, the team is already moving forward in its search for a new play-caller. According to reports, Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells is set to interview for the Jets’ offensive coordinator position under new head coach Aaron Glenn.
Wells is no stranger to the interview circuit this offseason. He previously met with the Commanders and is also in the mix for the Steelers’ offensive coordinator vacancy.
That kind of interest speaks volumes about how he's viewed around the league. Wells has spent the last six seasons in Dallas, helping develop a tight end group that’s played a key role in the Cowboys' offensive success.
Before that, he logged eight years with the Giants, giving him a strong foundation in NFC East football and plenty of experience working with a variety of offensive systems.
For the Jets, this hire is critical. With Engstrand out, the team has a clean slate to build an offense that complements its vision under Glenn.
Before Engstrand’s departure, the Jets had reportedly been in discussions with Frank Reich about joining the staff to handle play-calling duties. Now that the coordinator position is officially open, the organization will need to follow the full interview and hiring process before making any decisions - whether that leads them back to Reich or down a different path entirely.
One thing is clear: the Jets are casting a wide net and looking to bring in a voice that can spark an offense in need of direction. With a young head coach in place and a pivotal offseason ahead, this coordinator hire could set the tone for what’s to come in New York.
