The Dallas Cowboys’ defensive shuffle may not be as settled as Jerry Jones suggested.
Coming off last Thursday’s 24-16 loss to a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that had to start undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels in place of the injured Baker Mayfield, the Cowboys are still searching for answers on that side of the ball. Dallas got beat by a quarterback who looked anything but like a rookie, with Daniels going 19-for-25 passing, throwing a touchdown and finishing with a 110.2 RTG, per ESPN’s box score.
Jones did not hide his frustration after the game, calling the defeat “extraordinarily, extraordinarily disappointing” and expressing surprise at how Tampa Bay attacked Dallas up front.
“They basically were very physical. I thought both their fronts - I was really surprised how they ran the ball, how they ran it between the tackles.
That was surprising. We thought if they were going to run it, they’d do it outside.”
On Tuesday, Jones said on 105.3 The FAN that defensive coordinator Christian Parker would move from the field to the booth for Sunday night’s matchup with the Green Bay Packers in an effort to help the defense.
But Brian Schottenheimer poured a little cold water on that plan Wednesday, saying in his press conference that “none of those decisions have been finalized.”
“There’s a good chance Christian is on the field,” Schottenheimer added, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “Christian Parker is our defensive coordinator. All (defensive) decisions will go through him.”
Even if Parker’s exact game-day spot is still up in the air, Dallas has already made a notable addition to the defensive staff. Former NFL defensive coordinator and head coach Mike Pettine has joined as a defensive assistant, and Stephen Jones laid out what that could mean during his Tuesday appearance on 105.3 The FAN.
“We think Coach Pettine can really be a positive for (Brian Schottenheimer), for Christian (Parker). They both have great experience with him,” Stephen said.
“I think the thing will evolve. Just like Ken Dorsey’s role (as pass game specialist) evolves with (QB coach Steve Shimko) and Schotty and (offensive coordinator) Klayton (Adams), I think Mike Pettine’s role, he’ll get in here; he’s a seasoned coach who everybody’s very comfortable with.
“He’s not going to coach a position, so I think that’s very helpful in terms of looking at the defense holistically. It’s always good to get a new set of eyes in here at any point in time just to, if you will, scout you, and say, ‘Hey, here are the things you might, should consider and look at.’ The great thing is he does have a great history with both Coach Schottenheimer and Christian.”
However the responsibilities shake out, the next test comes fast. Pettine and Parker will be working to slow down a Packers team that appeared to hit its stride in Sunday’s 31-7 win over the Chicago Bears.

CeeDee Lamb Gives Cowboys A Needed Boost Before Packers Test
CeeDee Lamb gave the Cowboys a welcome midweek lift by practicing fully Wednesday and Thursday as they prepared for their Week 6 matchup with the Packers. Lamb took a bruised quad in Week 5, but he has been feeling better and appears on track to handle his usual workload when Dallas takes the field.
For a Cowboys offense that leans heavily on its top target, getting Lamb back at full speed matters just as much as getting him back on the field. He leads the team in receiving yards and touchdowns this season, and his availability gives Dallas a much cleaner outlook entering a test against Green Bay. [Read more 🡒]
Jerry Jones Gave Cowboys Fans A Rare Look At His Bigger Vision
Jerry Jones marked his 84th birthday by opening the doors to a side of his world Cowboys fans rarely get to see, giving FOX & Friends host Steve Doocy a tour of his Dallas mansion. The visit mixed personal history with franchise history, as Jones showed off memorabilia tied to the Cowboys past, including Super Bowl trophies, while also moving the conversation toward the clubs present and the work that has gone into reshaping the roster and staff this offseason.
The tour also offered a glimpse of the broader canvas Jones likes to work on, with art pieces and personal items filling the home and reinforcing how much of his life is built around legacy, taste and football. For Dallas fans, it was another reminder that Jones tends to think in terms bigger than a single season, even as the most immediate questions center on how the defense looks and how the coaching changes will settle in. Cowboys Need Two Missing Defenders To Help Fix A Shaky Defense
The Cowboys are still trying to steady a defense that has needed help, and the latest move on the coaching side shows how serious the urgency is. Christian Parker has been shifted to the booth to handle play-calling, while Mike Pettine has been added as a senior defensive assistant as Dallas looks for anything that can sharpen a unit that has not looked settled.
There is also a chance the help comes from the lineup itself. DeMarvion Overshown was limited in practice after dealing with a hamstring injury, and Joey Porter Jr. was a full participant after a recent illness, giving Dallas a possible boost heading into its game against the Green Bay Packers. Both have been on the field only once this season, so even getting them closer to available would matter for a defense searching for answers. [Read more 🡒]
