The Cowboys may not have gotten a chance to draft Brendan Sorsby, but the interest was real enough to say something about how Dallas is thinking at quarterback.
According to CowboysRoundtable.com, an NFL source said the Cowboys were "very interested" in taking the former Cincinnati quarterback if the league had gone ahead with a supplemental draft. That draft never happened, but the report says Dallas had Sorsby on its radar as a developmental option.
Sorsby’s route to the 2027 NFL Draft has been anything but ordinary. The NFL passed on holding a supplemental draft after he failed to regain eligibility following his admission of a gambling addiction.
He transferred to Texas Tech but was not able to play for the Red Raiders. After that, he reached a settlement and shifted his attention to the 2027 draft.
The report also says Dallas may have been willing to spend a second-round pick on him. That would have been a notable investment for a quarterback who would have been expected to sit and develop behind Dak Prescott rather than step in right away.
That matters because the Cowboys have already made moves this offseason at the position. They traded for Sam Howell and kept Joe Milton III as a backup to Prescott, who remains the team’s top quarterback. Even with those additions, the front office appears to be searching for longer-term depth instead of relying only on veteran stopgaps.
Sorsby still brings a résumé that would have caught attention. In two seasons as Cincinnati’s starter, he threw for more than 5,600 yards and 45 touchdowns. He also has the size and arm strength that NFL scouts tend to like in developmental quarterbacks.
For now, Dallas is moving forward with Prescott in place. But the Sorsby report suggests the Cowboys are already looking well beyond the present, with an eye on what comes after their franchise quarterback.
