Jerry Jones Just Had Some Fun With A Famous Cowboys Critic

Jerry Jones shows Stephen A. Smith that even rivalry can have a sense of humor, as he sends a playful birthday message amidst the Cowboys' rocky start to the season.

Jerry Jones had a birthday message ready for Stephen A. Smith, and it came with the kind of playful nonsense that only seems to work when the Dallas Cowboys owner is involved.

On Wednesday morning’s episode of ESPN First Take, Smith was surprised with a recorded video from Jones, who turned 84 on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The message mixed birthday wishes, age jokes and one of Jones’ familiar riffs about chaos.

“Stephen A., Jerry here. Happy birthday,” Jones said in a recording from Tuesday.

“My birthday is today, I knew you were a Libra. You know we don't like to leave the room if there's discord.

I have a lot of people tell me, "What in the hell happened to you, Jerry? You created discord.

Stephen A. You're 59.

I'm 84 today. If in any way over the next years, as you come to my age at roughly 25 years, if you have 1/10 the damn fun that I've had in the last 25, you're in for a ride.

Happy birthday.”

The moment fit right into the long-running back-and-forth between Jones and Smith, who has built a reputation as one of the loudest and most relentless Cowboys critics around. Dallas’ rough start hasn’t helped matters. The Cowboys are sitting at 2-3 through five games, and Smith has been piling on after the team’s losses to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5.

Jones, though, has clearly had no issue leaning into the whole thing. The birthday video was the latest example of the easygoing connection he and Smith have kept going over the years, even with all the Cowboys talk that usually comes with it.

And while the jokes are harmless, the bigger point remains the same: Jones would love nothing more than to win a Super Bowl for the first time in over 30 years and finally quiet Smith in the process.

For now, though, Dallas is nowhere near that moment.

Troy Aikmans ESPN Future Suddenly Feels Much Less Certain

Troy Aikman has at least clarified one part of the picture around his ESPN future: he plans to keep broadcasting through the current season before becoming a free agent. The Hall of Fame quarterback addressed the chatter during a radio interview, where he was asked about rumors of tension with Joe Buck and the uncertainty surrounding the networks top booth.

Aikman did not get into specifics about any reported friction, and he made clear he is not sure what comes next after this season. For Cowboys fans who still follow one of the most prominent voices linked to the franchises past, the bigger story now is not what he said about the rumors so much as how open-ended his broadcasting path has become. Jerry Jones Is Running Out Of Time To Seize The NFC East

Five weeks into the 2026 season, the NFC East looks wide open, and that creates both opportunity and pressure for the Cowboys. With no clear class of the division emerging from Dallas, Philadelphia, New York or Washington, Jerry Jones still has room to keep shaping the roster after adding cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and bringing in coach Mike Pettine, moves that suggest the front office is not treating this stretch like a finished product.

Dallas still has salary cap space and draft picks to work with, which means there is time to make another swing if Jones decides the roster needs it. The bigger question now is whether the Cowboys can turn all that flexibility into wins before the division slips away, especially with speculation already building around Brian Schottenheimers future depending on how this season unfolds. Cowboys Linked To Shedeur Sanders In Trade Buzz That Raises Questions

Shedeur Sanders decision to hire Adie von Gontard of Young Money APAA Sports has only added to the chatter around the Browns quarterback as the NFL trade deadline approaches. Any move would naturally draw attention, and in this case Dallas got pulled into the conversation because it is Dallas, where every quarterback rumor seems to land with extra weight.

CBS Sports John Breech was among those to float the Cowboys as a possible fit, citing Jerry Jones long-standing connection with Deion Sanders as part of the logic. Even so, the football case for a deal is thin right now, since the Cowboys already have established backup quarterbacks and no obvious need to chase another arm, which makes the speculation interesting more for the name recognition than for the odds of an actual trade.
