The Dallas Cowboys have taken a significant step by trading for Rashan Gary, but their work on the defensive front is far from over. Jerry Jones has a window before the draft to bolster the Cowboys' pass-rushing arsenal, and there's a veteran option that could seamlessly fit into their plans.
Enter Calais Campbell, a seasoned stalwart in the league since 2008. Standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 315 pounds, Campbell offers both a commanding presence and a wealth of experience that could restore the Cowboys' defensive credibility without breaking the bank.
Campbell, often dubbed the ageless wonder, is nearing 40 but shows no signs of slowing down. Remarkably, he's never played fewer than 12 games in a season and has started all 17 games over the past three years. His versatility to play both inside and outside makes him an ideal candidate for the Cowboys, especially after the trade of Osa Odighizuwa.
At the end of the 2025 season, Campbell hinted at the possibility of retirement, but given his consistent performance, stepping away seems unlikely. Last season, he ranked 19th among interior defenders with a 69.2 run-defense grade according to Pro Football Focus.
Additionally, he was seventh in quarterback hits and 11th in sacks, despite playing just 524 snaps. This level of contribution is precisely what the Cowboys need alongside starters Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark in Christian Parker's defense.
Financially, signing Campbell is feasible. Spotrac estimates a one-year, $10 million contract, while PFF suggests a one-year, $6 million deal with $5 million guaranteed. Both scenarios are within reach for Dallas.
After unsuccessful attempts to land an established pass rusher, including a bid for the Giants’ Kayvon Thibodeaux, the Cowboys are still searching for solutions. While Campbell might not have the same edge explosiveness as in his early days, his addition would provide reassurance as the Cowboys consider drafting an edge rusher in the first round.
