Jaydon Blue Just Forced Cowboys Fans To Revisit The RB2 Battle

Jaydon Blue dazzles in the Cowboys' opening practice, making a compelling case for the backup running back spot.

The Cowboys’ first practice in Oxnard gave Jaydon Blue exactly the kind of opening he needed in a crowded RB2 fight.

Dallas was only in Day 1 of camp and still working without pads, so nobody is ready to crown anyone after one session. But Blue made sure his name jumped off the timeline anyway.

Phil Mafah got the first crack behind Javonte Williams, then lost the ball on what was described as an elite punch-out from Rashan Gary. Blue stepped in for Mafah and answered with a 45-yard touchdown on his first touch, a run Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram said would have been legit in pads too.

That’s the kind of instant response that turns heads in a competition like this.

After practice, Jon Machota of The Athletic asked Blue about the score, and the second-year back didn’t exactly sound shy about what he brings to the table.

“My speed is what I’m best at," Blue said. "Once I get in the open field and it’s one-on-one, I don’t think anyone in this league can stand a chance.”

Blue showed that burst at times last summer, but it never translated into real trust from the coaching staff. He was a healthy inactive for most of his rookie year, played in just five games, and topped 15 snaps only once, in the regular-season finale.

This offseason has sounded different. Brian Schottenheimer praised Blue during OTAs and minicamp, calling him “night and day” from last season. Blue has also been seen putting in extra work after practice, and he said he hasn’t been able to take his eyes off the playbook this offseason.

Still, one big play doesn’t settle the job. Blue may have landed the first punch, but the RB2 battle is only getting started.

Mafah showed power before the fumble and will get more chances to make his case. Malik Davis enters camp as the incumbent RB2 after holding that spot for most of last season following Miles Sanders’ season-ending knee injury. Israel Abanikanda and Dominic Richardson are in the mix as well, and both are hungry for opportunities.

Blue’s speed will keep him in the conversation, but the real test is whether he can do everything else the position demands. That means staying sharp with blocking assignments, running behind the right blockers, picking up every audible in the playbook, and getting Dak Prescott’s cadence down.

For one practice, though, Blue made the loudest possible statement.

Jerry Jones Looks Even Smarter After Quinnen Williams Said This

Quinnen Williams arrived in Dallas with the kind of reputation that can change the tone of a defense the moment he walks through the door. Acquired from the Jets to help shore up a unit that struggled last season, the veteran lineman has already made it clear he understands why the Cowboys made the move, and why the pressure around him is about more than individual production.

Williams said his motivation goes beyond himself, pointing to teammates like Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb as part of what he wants to win for in Dallas. He also acknowledged the defenses issues from a year ago, which is exactly why his presence matters so much now. If he settles in the way the Cowboys expect, Jerry Jones may have added a cornerstone at the right time. [Read more 🡒]

4 Cowboys Already Turning Heads At Training Camp

The first Cowboys practice of training camp gave Brian Schottenheimer an early look at a few players who wasted no time making an impression. Quarterback Joe Milton, running back Jaydon Blue, edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku and safety Jalen Thompson were the names the head coach pointed to after the opening session, a promising sign for a roster that is already sorting out roles before the 2026-27 season gets any closer.

Milton is in the mix for the backup job behind Dak Prescott, while Blue is trying to carve out a bigger piece of the backfield after a quiet rookie year. Ezeiruaku is expected to step into a starting edge role, and Thompson arrived with plenty of attention after signing with Dallas this offseason, so the early buzz around all four gives the staff something to monitor as camp settles in. Cowboys Secondary Hit With Scary Camp Injury On Day One

The first day of Cowboys training camp brought an immediate scare for the secondary when PJ Locke went down during a backpedaling drill and had to leave the field early for evaluation by team trainers. The safety, who arrived in Dallas on a one-year deal after six seasons with the Broncos, was quickly at the center of concern because the injury looked severe in real time.

Locke is expected to be a meaningful piece of the back end, so any issue involving him is going to draw attention right away in camp. The early fear around the play was enough to unsettle a defense that is trying to settle in fast, and the next step will be seeing how the Cowboys manage his recovery and whether the setback keeps him off the field longer than they first hoped.
