Jake Paul is already talking like a man with a second act in mind.
The boxer, former YouTuber and actor told Front Office Sports that he has had conversations with NFL teams and coaches about a possible future in football, though he framed that move as something that would come “after boxing.”
“I have a couple teams and coaches that I've already talked to who are interested in bringing me on to the team,” Paul said.
Paul didn’t stop there. He also took a shot at the level of play in the league, arguing that he stacks up well against a lot of current NFL talent.
“I think there's a lot of super-mediocrity in the NFL, a lot of not good athletes, a lot of people dropping passes on a consistent basis,” Paul said. “I have better hands than them, I'm faster than them, I'm stronger than them, I work harder than them.”
He added that he would only need to “practice some routes” to get ready, a comment that suggests he sees himself fitting in as a receiver or tight end.
Paul, who is 29 and will turn 30 in January, is a lifelong Browns fan and said Cleveland would be his dream landing spot. He also said the Cowboys are on his wish list. In June, Paul said Dallas was interested in him too, and he even raised the possibility of walking on with a college program to put himself in front of NFL teams.
There’s still a big gap between talking about the league and actually getting there. Paul dropped out of Westlake High School after two years, and even if he played football before, it has been at least 13 years since he last competed on a field. That kind of layoff matters, especially for a player pushing toward 30.
Still, Paul seems to believe his path is open. He pointed to the Browns and Cowboys as the two teams he’d most want to join, and both have reputations that could make them willing to entertain an unconventional idea. The Browns have never been shy about controversial names, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is always willing to welcome a little extra attention.
