Trevon Diggs Returns from Unusual Injury, Cowboys Fall Short in Week 16
Trevon Diggs made his long-awaited return to the field in Week 16, suiting up for the first time in two months after a bizarre and unfortunate injury sidelined him. The Cowboys’ star cornerback missed eight games due to a concussion he sustained not on the field, but at home - the result of a TV mount pole falling on his head. It was an odd twist in a season that’s already had its fair share of adversity for Dallas.
Diggs’ return came at a critical moment. The Cowboys had just lost fellow cornerback DaRon Bland for the season due to a foot injury, and with playoff hopes hanging by a thread, the defense needed a boost. Diggs stepped back into the starting lineup and logged 52 snaps in the Cowboys’ loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Despite the defeat, Diggs showed flashes of the playmaking ability that made him a Pro Bowler. He finished the game with six tackles and looked comfortable in his first action since the injury. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones took notice, offering praise for the cornerback’s effort and awareness after such a long layoff.
“Without looking at the game film, I wouldn't know when he was in or out of coverage,” Jones said. “But I thought he played with a lot of, really, awareness.
He played against some good competition. That's a good quarterback out there.
I was glad to see him back out there.”
That quarterback, of course, was part of a Chargers offense that managed to outpace Dallas in a game that ultimately sealed the Cowboys’ fate. With the loss, and a win by the Philadelphia Eagles over the Washington Commanders, Dallas was officially eliminated from playoff contention. It's another disappointing end to a season that began with high expectations.
The Diggs injury saga even drew criticism off the field. Emmanuel Acho, speaking on Speakeasy, didn’t hold back when discussing the circumstances surrounding the concussion.
“If I can be real, I blame Trevon Diggs,” Acho said. “Your pass defense is that bad, but you are one of the best defensive backs in all of football by paper.
You are one of the most talented when the ball is in the air, and you are not even present… Then to hear the report that he got a concussion because he was installing a TV and it fell on his head. I also blame you for being dumb.”
Harsh words, but Diggs isn’t focused on the noise. With two games left on the schedule, he’s back in the lineup and looking to finish the year strong. The Cowboys face the Commanders next, a team that has dropped nine of its last ten games and is limping toward the finish line.
For Diggs, the final stretch is less about standings and more about proving he’s still the elite cornerback the Cowboys need heading into next season. After battling through both head and knee injuries, his presence on the field is a reminder of what Dallas missed during his absence - and what they’ll hope to build around moving forward.
