The Dallas Cowboys are facing a challenging situation with their linebacker corps, which currently ranks among the least effective in the league. Despite their efforts, they missed out on signing top talents like Nakobe Dean and Quay Walker, who opted for the Las Vegas Raiders instead.
In response, Dallas is exploring trade options, with Miami Dolphins' standout linebacker Jordyn Brooks emerging as a potential target. According to Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald, the Cowboys have shown interest in Brooks, among other teams.
While no deal has been finalized, Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan recently shed light on the team's decision to trade wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, a key player on their roster. Sullivan explained, “We’re in a situation in Miami where we need to get younger and more cost-effective. Jaylen’s a great player, but at 27, he’s looking for a new contract in a rising receiver market, which doesn’t align with our long-term plans.”
This reasoning also applies to Brooks, who at 29, is even less aligned with Miami’s future direction. Brooks, a first-round pick by the Seahawks in 2020, is nearing the end of his contract with Miami, which he signed as a free agent in 2024. With a cap hit of $10.86 million and no guaranteed money left, Brooks is likely seeking a new contract soon.
After an All-Pro season, Brooks is undoubtedly looking to secure his future. It's possible Dallas could negotiate an extension post-trade, but it’s not a prerequisite. The key takeaway is that Brooks’ contract and age don’t fit Miami’s current strategy.
While the Dolphins might be hesitant to lose a veteran presence like Brooks, especially given his leadership and impressive stats-199 tackles, 61 defensive stops, and a 92.0 run-defense grade last season-financial realities are pressing. Sullivan is working to manage a hefty $179 million in dead money this year, with significant commitments already on the books for next year.
For Dallas, acquiring Brooks could be the boost they need, and with Miami’s focus on restructuring, the opportunity is there for the taking.
