The Dallas Cowboys have taken a strategic approach this offseason, focusing on strengthening their defense without breaking the bank in free agency. They've made some savvy moves, notably by securing safety Jalen Thompson and acquiring pass rusher Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers.
Originally, the Cowboys had their sights set on Maxx Crosby, and they were in the mix until the last minute. However, the plan shifted when a potential trade with the Baltimore Ravens fell through.
According to Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News, Dallas offered two draft picks-a first and a second-rounder-and was ready to handle Crosby's salary and knee concerns. Despite the setback, the Cowboys seem content with Gary and are now eyeing the NFL draft for additional pass-rushing talent.
Watkins highlights an intriguing aspect: Dallas was prepared to take on Crosby's salary and his knee issues, showing their willingness to gamble on his potential despite health uncertainties. While Jerry Jones hasn't completely ruled out a future deal, the focus has clearly shifted. The Cowboys, holding the 12th overall pick, are poised to capitalize on the draft, hoping one of the top edge rushers falls into their lap.
In Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft, players like David Bailey, Arvell Reese, Sonny Styles, and Rueben Bain Jr. are projected to go early. If Dallas wants to snag a top-tier edge rusher, they might need to trade up, a bold move for a team looking to fill multiple defensive gaps.
If the draft unfolds as predicted, Dallas might opt to trade down from 12 to 20, gaining extra draft capital. Kiper's mock draft has the next defensive lineman, Peter Woods, going at 22nd to the Chargers, with Zion Young and Keldric Faulk wrapping up the first round of pass rushers.
At pick 20, Dallas could target T.J. Parker (Clemson), Akheem Mesidor (Miami), or Cashius Howell (Texas A&M).
While they might not match the top talents, Parker and Howell offer high potential, while Mesidor provides reliability. The Cowboys have already had formal meetings with all three at the NFL Combine.
Dallas has also re-signed Sam Williams and brought back Tyrus Wheat, though they're expected to serve as depth. With Donovan Ezeiruaku sidelined due to hip surgery, the need for a dynamic edge player alongside Gary becomes even more pressing. A healthy trio of Ezeiruaku, Gary, and a first-round pick could be just what the Cowboys need to elevate their pass rush in 2026.
